Residents of Hong Kong are the ecommerce champions of the world. By far.

The average consumer spends $2,868 per year online shopping in Hong Kong, according to data from the German statistics firm Statista. The country next in line for the most online spending is Norway, with an average of $2,448 spent per consumer. And Israel rounds has the third most online spending per capita with $2,171 spent per year.

To be sure, online spending correlates with a country’s wealth. And only countries that are reasonably well connected to the Internet are included in this research.

A temporary shop atop the Etsy shop they already have? I will have to wait and see them in action I think. It's funny, pop ups didn't bother me too much in the first round (then or so years ago) but they bug me now. Mostly because it is harder to close them, some hide the X marks the spot.

There are plenty of reasons consumers use smartphones to shop, ranging from access to product information to finding competitive pricing.

And many shoppers find their own preferred path to purchase and their own reasons why.

For example, as I wrote about earlier this week, consumers use both apps and mobile websites to shop and more find mobile browsers to be more convenient (More Mobile Shoppers Like Convenience of Websites Over Apps).

Almost half (46%) of mobile shoppers say their shopping experience would be better if they could check available stock while in a store and almost a third (31%) want in-store Wi-Fi with a simple login.

But some consumers don’t use any online tools to buy, primarily because they like to shop in a store where they can see and touch their desired products.

Based on a large global study by PwC, of those who did not purchase online, here are the top reasons:

54% -- Prefer to touch/try the product52% -- Just prefer to shop in store43% -- Worried about security of personal data35% -- Don’t trust online payment methods25% -- Don’t have a credit/debit card

Last year it was showrooming – the practice of checking out merchandise in a store, then ordering it online, usually from some place else.


Retailers hate that and geared up this holiday season to try and counter it with aggressive online deals of their own. But consumers are on to a new trend – webrooming – according to a new survey from Harris Interactive.


Webrooming is just the reverse. A consumer will use a desktop or mobile device at home to check out deals, then head for the store to make the purchase.

People Shopping on Mobile Devices Visit More Sites Than Those on a PC | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it

Mobile devices have made it possible for people to shop anywhere, anytime, and apparently, they’re taking advantage. According to Millward Brown Digital, people who shop from their mobiles visit more retailer sites than those who shop from their PCs (6.2 retailer visits per month on mobiles versus 2.9 on PCs). Mobile shoppers also use search engines and social media sites more than PC shoppers do. With all that opportunity to capture mobile purchases (or lose them to rivals), there’s all the more reason for retailers to make sure their mobile strategy is airtight.

It is nearly impossible not to notice some (more than) probably gender differences here; it sure looks like the men are shopping via mobile phone and tablet, while women are at the pc. This likely means big differences in terms of social sites, such as Pinterest, as well as in the shopping categories themselves.

Nifti, a Boston startup offering a shopping service which helps consumers track product discounts, said Thursday it's raised $800,000 in seed funding led by Google Ventures and Otto Capital.

As of the first of February, this store will be charging people a $5 fee per person for “just looking.”

 

The $5 fee will be deducted when goods are purchased.

 

Why has this come about?

 

There has been high volume of people who use this store as a reference and then purchase goods elsewhere. These people are unaware our prices are almost the same as the other stores plus we have products simply not available anywhere else.

 

This policy is line with many other clothing, shoe and electronic stores who are also facing the same issue.

I’m standing before a vast crumbling structure surrounded by broken security fencing; A Danger-Keep-Out sign lies crushed and rusted on the tarmac of what was once an immense car park. Inside, beyond the barricaded doors, I know that escalators have warped and decayed into terrifying reptilian shapes; that beneath the caved-in roof among the broken glass and the smashed tiles, saplings have sprouted. I know that remnants of signage and advertisements haunt the walls; that the entire place is like some gothic fantasy of the end of the world. I know because I have seen the images. I am afraid to enter, not because I fear ghosts, but because the place is too powerful to be breached or touched. It is both a memorial to my childhood, and to my years of political confusion; some kind of concrete metaphor for my fears for the future and my family. Or maybe it’s just an empty building – I don’t know. The sight of it nonetheless moves me to tears.
