Retail therapy: How Ernest Dichter, an acolyte of Sigmund Freud, revolutionised marketing | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it
“You would be amazed to find how often we mislead ourselves, regardless of how smart we think we are, when we attempt to explain why we are behaving the way we do,” Dichter observed in 1960, in his book “The Strategy of Desire”. He held that marketplace decisions are driven by emotions and subconscious whims and fears, and often have little to do with the product itself. Trained as a psychoanalyst, Dichter saw human motivation as an “iceberg”, with two-thirds hidden from view, even to the decision-maker. “What people actually spend their money on in most instances are psychological differences, illusory brand images,” he explained.

At a time when national companies were aggressively jockeying for position among Americans—a suddenly cash-happy and acquisitive bunch—Dichter promised a way to influence consumers' brains. If shopping was an emotional minefield, then strategic marketing could be a gold mine for companies.

Between the late 1930s and 1960s Dichter became famous for transforming the fates of businesses such as Procter & Gamble, Exxon, Chrysler, General Mills and DuPont. His insight changed the way hundreds of products were sold, from cars to cake mix. He pioneered research techniques such as the focus group, understood the power of word-of-mouth persuasion and earned startling fees for his theories. By the late 1950s his global business reached an annual turnover of $1m ($8m today), and he enjoyed a reputation as the Freud of the supermarket age.

A temporary shop atop the Etsy shop they already have? I will have to wait and see them in action I think. It's funny, pop ups didn't bother me too much in the first round (then or so years ago) but they bug me now. Mostly because it is harder to close them, some hide the X marks the spot.

pricing. seriously, i think this is one of the most challenging parts of
building your own little biz.

last week i recommended an ebook called earn what you deserve. this book  does not give you a magic formula for figuring out your pricing. what it does do is tackle the underlying issues you need to consider before you can really charge what you are worth.

let me say that again. no pricing advice in the world is going to help you
if you do not have a sense of the value of your work.

earn what you deserve is going to help you do that. with it, you consider
what it means to be a biz owner, tackle your own beliefs about money and finances, figure out the true cost of doing business, look at new ways of marketing and selling, and start to build your own sense of value in your work and your product. once you have done that, then what?

well it is time to look at what you have been charging for your product. as
promised i have compiled a list of tips, advice and strategies from all
over the place that may help you with this. this is not a step-by-step
formula for figuring out your price. (if i ever find the elusive, magic
step-by-step formula for pricing i will share it immediately!) what i have
done is a lot of research into different strategies and taken the bits and
pieces that make sense to me and apply them to what i do. so i am sharing those bits and pieces with you here.

If the U.S. economy is getting better, then why are major retail chains closing thousands of stores?  If we truly are in an “economic recovery”, then why do sales figures continue to go down for large retailers all over the country?  Without a doubt, the rise of Internet retailing giants such as Amazon.com have had a huge impact.  Today, there are millions of Americans that actually prefer to shop online.  Personally, when I published my novel I made it solely available on Amazon.  But Internet shopping alone does not account for the great retail apocalypse that we are witnessing. 


In fact, some retail experts estimate that the Internet has accounted for only about 20 percent of the decline that we are seeing.  Most of the rest of it can be accounted for by the slow, steady death of the middle class U.S. consumer.  Median household income has declined for five years in a row, but all of our bills just keep going up.  That means that the amount of disposable income that average Americans have continues to shrink, and that is really bad news for retailers....

Truly, IoT has caught the imagination of the technology world and there are many predictions about the impact it will have in the coming years.

GoDaddy (ick( SVP of Productivity Apps Steven Aldrich says, "Continued consolidation of buyers to the biggest marketplaces Amazon and eBay - they were the top two ecommerce destinations during the holiday shopping period. To grow, it will be necessary to have a presence on one of those sites or put significant effort to create sustainable traffic to your own online presence."


I think this needs some clarification; including a link to such a fact. Even if the statement is true, there are other issues.


Both marketplaces carry just about everything, yet are these sites the most important places to be if you have a niche product?


For example, sellers of art, antiques, vintage items, custom pieces, etc. have already found sites like Etsy -- which does not cater to the big brands & box stores -- to bring more sales via more targeted shoppers.


Boutique brands and indie shops shoot themselves in the foot by being at such mainstream marketplaces as Amazon & Ebay.


Bigger isn't always what it seems.

Commuters in London could soon pick up Amazon orders at their local underground station under plans to turn ticket offices into parcel drop-off points.


Transport for London is reportedly in talks with the online retail giant after it announced it's going to close all 240 ticket offices by 2015 with the loss of 750 jobs.

As consumers grow more accustomed to speedy online deliveries, eBay is hoping to exceed consumer demand. To accomplish this, the auction giant just acquired Shutl, a marketplace that uses a network of couriers to deliver local goods on a same-day basis.


According to Devin Wenig, president of eBay Marketplaces, consumption on the auction network has shifted strongly toward local purchases, probably as a result of eBay Now, a service released last October that lets shoppers order products from local stores and receive them in as little as an hour.


“Today, approximately 75 percent of what people buy is local, found within 15 miles from their home,” said Wenig. “Traditional retail isn’t going away. But it is transforming, and that creates enormous opportunity within the $10 trillion total commerce market.”...
