A women stands on the gallows as the sun sinks below the trees. A noose is looped around her frail, wrinkled neck. Although exhausted from spending sleepless nights lying on the frozen, cement floor of her jail cell, she stands tall and firm. With confidence she screams, "I am innocent". In 1692, 200 people were convicted of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts all who were mostly likely innocent. Of those 200, 19 people were killed by hanging. This horrific event ensued as a result of the Puritans deep seeded prejudice.

 Why Create Student Newsletters?

Although teachers should monitor for (in)appropriate content, student newsletters give students a voice and a creative outlet to share and allow readers to get information. A student newsletter about books also:

- promotes not only books, but promotes reading in general
- improves visual literacy and media literacy
- empowers contributing writers and artists and inspires others to write too
- makes creators and contributors more aware of the processes of reading, writing and publishing
- gives creators and contributors of the newsletter valuable artistic and technical skills
- keeps students informed about upcoming school events or literary events in the community
- creates a culture of reading at school

How to Create a Student Newsletter?

Here are some roles and responsibilities necessary in creating a collaborative newsletter. Ideally, students will learn to manage themselves, but teachers should be available to monitor, give ideas and encouragement.

- writers
- editors
- artists / illustrators
- photographers
- layout / digital layout people
- printers and distributors

Although some students may love helping out with the newsletter each month, new students should always be encouraged to join so any student who wants the experience of creating will have the opportunity to do so. Teachers, older students or experienced students can mentor new contributors to the newsletter. A great newsletter is about collaboration and teamwork.

What about the Content?

A student newsletter about books doesn't mean that it will be limited to book talk. Here are some ideas on what can be included in a student newsletter about books:

- introductions to new books (or even old ones)
- book reviews
- articles about literary events at school or in the community
- creative literary essays about books or reading
- interviews with literary people (visiting authors, writers)
- interviews with students about books or reading habits
- letters to the editor / opinion page
- student art work such as original book covers, characters, scenes or objects from stories
- comics or cartoons about books or reading
- photographs of students reading or engaging in social reading activities
- a schedule of school library events
- announcements for writing contests and spotlights on winning entries and student authors
- an invitation to contribute to the next student newsletter!

Fantastic tool! Print or share by email.

Amy Perrett's curator insight, June 1, 2013 4:03 AM

This resource is an interactive tool where you can design newspapers, brouchures and flyers. Teachers and students can choose from several templates to publish class newspapers, informational brouchures or even event flyers. Excellent tool for the whole class to get involved with as they can make their own weekly newspapers for the class to share (read, write, think. 2013).
