After five years of offering unlimited free photo backups at “high quality,” Google Photos will start charging for storage once more than 15 gigs on the account have been used. The change will happen on June 1st, 2021, and it comes with other Google Drive policy changes like counting Google Workspace documents and spreadsheets against the same cap. Google is also introducing a new policy of deleting data from inactive accounts that haven’t been logged in to for at least two years.

All photos and documents uploaded before June 1st will not count against that 15GB cap, so you have plenty of time to decide whether to continue using Google Photos or switching to another cloud storage provider for your photos. Only photos uploaded after June 1st will begin counting against the cap.

Google already counts “original quality” photo uploads against a storage cap in Google Photos. However, taking away unlimited backup for “high quality” photos and video (which are automatically compressed for more efficient storage) also takes away one of the service’s biggest selling points. It was the photo service where you just didn’t have to worry about how much storage you had.

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

4 selfies per human per week #4selfies : today more than 4 trillion photos are stored in Google Photos, and every week 28 billion new photos and videos are uploaded...

ZangZing will close soon after MobileMe

ZangZing will close soon after MobileMe | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

ZangZing had been cleverly standing out as a possible "after MobileMe" solution for those who cannot wait for iOS6 "share from Photostream" feature unveiled at WWDC.

Joseph Ansanelli's team had designed a superior user interface, a clever ingestion mechanism including fetching albums from other sites, along with comprehensive privacy settings while sharing albums with others.

The email below is therefore a total surprise for subscribers as well as a strong disappointment, and we don't understand yet what motivated it.

Now that two consumer photosharing services are gone, which of the remaining ones will stand out and take care of the rest of us ?

Hi Philippe,

Unfortunately, we have some sad news to share.

On July 2nd, ZangZing will no longer accept new users to join or new photos to be uploaded.

On August 31st, we will be shutting down ZangZing and permanently deleting all photos, contact information, and account information.

To download your original photos, please follow these steps:
Sign in at www.zangzing.com/signinMouse-over the album you would like to downloadClick the "i" menu and choose Download. This will create a Zip file of all the original photos in that album. Once each album is completely downloaded, then begin the next album download as simultaneous downloads can become corrupted on some web browsersRepeat this for all your albums

If you have any problems, please refer to this Help article, http://zan.gy/Gzv1Qd.

Thank you for sharing our same passion for design, privacy, and group photo sharing. You inspired us.

The ZangZing Team

New Facebook for iOS changes UI (again) and limits photo uploads #fail

New Facebook for iOS changes UI (again) and limits photo uploads #fail | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

UI design is about maintaining consistency while expanding possibilities. Looks like Facebook's latest iOS update does the opposite...

Today facebook changed (once again) the gestures that everybody knew by now (given the high usage rate of the app), which will induce latency, friction and frustration from single handed, zero attention span millions of users.

But maybe one can see some wisdom in such choices, that over time may be progressively forgotten.

More frustrating are some feature reductions, namely in the photo area of the app that now longer allows posting pictures that are not in the camera roll.

For instance, it is no longer possible to enrich a post with a photo picked in an existing album, including the photostream. This is a big restriction in terms of features and UI, with no understandable reason.
