Things rarely turn out precisely the way we hoped.
Sometimes, if we’re lucky, we can figure out why.
If we find the lesson and learn from it, it might be even more valuable than if we’d simply gotten lucky.
In both their monolithic entirety and their fragmented minutiae, social media are hard to comprehend. Their sheer mobility, variety and density make them difficult to grasp. After leaving Twitter I've been thinking about whether it is possible to understand social media from the outside*. I'm wondering if knowing their rapid streams requires the researcher to also be a participant within them? Maybe a better way to think about this would be to ask what can still be understood from the outside and what is more likely to be missed when not exposed to social media's circulations of content.
The phrase "digital garden" a metaphor for thinking about writing and creating that focuses less on the resulting "showpiece" and more on the process, care, and craft it takes to get there. While not everybody has or works in a dirt garden…

Call it what you want cuz I don’t even care anymore Call me what you need to to make yourself comfortable
I’ve not left the house in a while I’ve not felt a glimpse of ease And I have not made much headway Since-I-have-come-back from the war And I no longer give a damn ‘bout things that used to matter And I am covering my eyes as I am frozen on the spot
Call it what you want cuz I don’t even care anymore Call me what you need to to make yourself comfortable So I am debilitated I can’t remember where the sentence started when I’m trying to finish it And-All-of-you-are-so frustrated And everyone around me is trying to help as much as they can
My house is spotless my lens is skewed my limbs they recoil And I’m folding in on myself since I am out of order
Call it what you want cuz I don’t even care anymore Call me what you want to to make yourself comfortable So I am debilitated I can’t remember where the sentence started when I’m trying to finish it And all of you are so frustrated And everyone around me is trying to help as much as they can But I’m alone in this meltdown of nervousness diagnosis Call it what you want cuz I don’t even care anymore Call me what you need to to make yourself comfortable So I am debilitated I can’t remember where the sentence started when I’m trying to finish it All of you are so frustrated
And everyone around me is trying to help as much as they can Call it what you want Call me what you need to---to feel comfortable
Around 25 years ago, when I worked at International House London, I used to teach a course called ‘Current Trends in ELT’. I no longer have records of the time so I can’t be 100% sure what was included in the course, but task-based learning, the ‘Lexical Approach’, the use of corpora, English as a…

Social media multiplies this by counting “likes” (which doesn’t mean someone actually likes us) or “friends” (which doesn’t mean that someone is actually our friend.)
The irony is that the people we’re most likely to want to trust and engage with are the ones who don’t pose. They’re consistent, committed and clear, but they’re not faking it.
Figure out what you want to say, the change you seek to make, the story you want to tell–and then tell it. Wholeheartedly and with intent.

Nothing's gonna hurt you the way that words do When they settle 'neath your skin Kept on the inside and no sunlight Sometimes a shadow wins But I wonder what would happen if you
Say what you wanna say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave With what you want to say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave
I just wanna see you I just wanna see you I just wanna see you I wanna see you be brave

The portion of the population that needs to get sick is not fixed. We can change it.
Ana Cristina Pratas's insight:
"He called this finding “the butterfly effect.” In a complex model, where each day’s weather influences the next day’s, a tweak in initial conditions can have wild downstream consequences. The butterfly effect became central to the emerging field of chaos theory, which has since been applied to economics, sociology, and many other subjects, in attempts to deconstruct complex phenomena. That field is now helping predict the future of the pandemic—in particular, how it ends.
Chaos theory applies neatly to the spread of the coronavirus, in that seemingly tiny decisions or differences in reaction speed can have inordinate consequences. Effects can seem random when, in fact, they trace to discrete decisions made long prior."
One becomes stupid when they abdicate their will over to an ideology or collective; while they retain their intellect, their will to think independently, and to question their beliefs, is forfeited…
