Discussion boards can be used for a variety of activities, so why limit ourselves just to discussions, especially if those discussions aren’t creating meaningful student engagement?

Online Course Enrollment Grows in Face of Shrinking College Enrollment

The share of college students taking online courses has grown, up by about 6 percent, even as the overall number of people enrolled in higher education institutions dropped by about half a percent. According to preliminary numbers issued by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics, of the 20.1 million students enrolled in fall 2017, 6.7 million were taking at least one distance education class, representing 33 percent of the total — a boost from 31 percent in the previous year.

Are professors hindering students’ learning processes by taking away laptops? | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
Professors in higher education are debating whether laptops should be allowed in the classroom. Am I missing something? Apart from a cutesy user interface, this appears to me to be a Q&A discussion forum over/around a video. I do like the in timeline comments (nod to Perusall!) but from the video on their website, it does not seem to me to be as 'interactive video' as Coursera/Hapyak or even H5P define it.

Perhaps there are features that they are not showing us, but there is not much info on the website. When I want to know about integration with Moodle, or prices I get shoved to a sales form? Might be good for school, but as it looks to me, a little lightweight for highered in its current state. The Emperor's New Clothes?

Evaluation of MCQs from MOOCs for common item writing flaws | BMC Research Notes | Full Text

Evaluation of MCQs from MOOCs for common item writing flaws | BMC Research Notes | Full Text | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
There is a dearth of research into the quality of assessments based on Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) items in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). This dataset was generated to determine whether MCQ item writing flaws existed in a selection of MOOC assessments, and to evaluate their prevalence if so. Hence, researchers reviewed MCQs from a sample of MOOCs, using an evaluation protocol derived from the medical health education literature, which has an extensive evidence-base with regard to writing quality MCQ items. This dataset was collated from MCQ items in 18 MOOCs in the areas of medical health education, life sciences and computer science. Two researchers critically reviewed 204 questions using an evidence-based evaluation protocol. In the data presented, 50% of the MCQs (112) have one or more item writing flaw, while 28% of MCQs (57) contain two or more flaws. Thus, a majority of the MCQs in the dataset violate item-writing guidelines, which mirrors findings of previous research that examined rates of flaws in MCQs in traditional formal educational contexts.

Google+ is shutting down at last. Google announced today it’s sunsetting its consumer-facing social network due to lack of user and developer adoption, low usage and engagement. Oh, and a data leak. It even revealed how poorly the network is performing, noting that 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds long. Yikes.

But things weren’t always like this. Google+ was once heralded as a serious attempt to topple Facebook’s stranglehold on social networking, and was even met with excitement in its first days.
