Move to Online Learning: 12 Key Ideas – Dave’s Educational Blog

Move to Online Learning: 12 Key Ideas – Dave’s Educational Blog | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

I got asked by a long time colleague if I was willing to do a post of all the things that I’ve learned in the last eight weeks about moving online. Not ’emergency teaching’ but actual lessons about people moving to teaching with the internet. I’ve worked with over 100 faculty at my own institution this past few months, taking them through a 1 week intensive course. I’ve also been in constant contact with folks from around the world both through my interviews on http://oliah.ca and in endless backchannels and side chats. Here’s what I got.

Media and Information Literacy: creative and critical engagement across the curriculum and beyond #RBE2019 | Information Literacy Weblog: Slides | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
Today I delivered a workshop Media and Information Literacy: creative and critical engagement across the curriculum and beyond university life at the Research-Based Education conference at the University of Adelaide, Australia, together with Bill Johnston. These are the slides.

Media and Information Literacy: creative and critical engagement across the curriculum and beyond university life from Sheila Webber

This was the abstract: The aims of this workshop are: to unpack UNESCO’s “composite concept” of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and its relationship to research-based learning (RBL), and to stimulate participants to reflect on how MIL could enhance learning for citizenship.

Academic Integrity in the Online Classroom

Academic Integrity in the Online Classroom | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
As distance education grows, so does the need to ensure student identity and academic integrity. The academic integrity landscape continues to evolve, and universities have deployed a variety of methods to ensure integrity. The Ohio State University used a dual approach to ensure academic integrity across its distance education offerings employing a virtual proctoring solution and faculty education on authentic assessments. A solid foundation was set with this initiative; however, development will continue in order to meet the needs of a changing educational landscape.

Origins and perspectives

Digital skills, literacies, and competences – there is no shortage of policy documents and well-publicised national aspirations (regardless of which nation you happen to be in!) in this space. But much of the focus tends to be on building up technical competence, tied to particular job responsibilities, or stage of education. Yet, of course, we are surrounded with technologies in almost every aspect of our everyday lives. In part, it frees us from past drudgery, whilst elsewhere it burdens us with new expectations and anxieties. How we live, work, and learn in a digital age is a crucial question.

When considering a response to three documents: Ireland’s National Digital Strategy; Digital Agenda for Europe (now the ‘Digital Single Market‘); and the Digital Roadmap for Irish Higher Education; we wondered whether it might be possible to try a slightly different approach to the more usual development of a competency framework, formal programmes and traditional skills qualifications.

Control those tabs ! Five web browser tab tips. –

Control those tabs ! Five web browser tab tips. – | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
This was me. Does it sound like you ?

Too many tabs open in my browser …I think 64 was my record. In just one window. I am also a great “that is too messy, so I will open a nice, clean window” (but not close the other open ones) kind of woman.
But….I can’t close the open tabs because some must be useful, this is DAYS worth of tab-opening right here.
Can’t find what I want, so…I’ll just open that tab again, rather than locate the right tab.
My laptop is slowing down because displaying the fiddly bits on the open pages is hogging memory.
I know I will use these nine web pages each workday, and am sick of opening them each morning.
Oh damn!! I didn’t mean to close that tab, and now I can’t remember how exactly I got to it

ALTC Personal Highlights

I’ve already written an overview and some thoughts on the ALTC keynotes, this post is an additional reflection on some of my personal highlights of the conference.

I was involved in three sessions this year; Wikipedia belongs in education with Wikimedia UK CEO Lucy Crompton-Reid and UoE Wikimedian in Residence Ewan McAndrew, Influential voices – developing a blogging service based on trust and openness with DLAM’s Karen Howie, and Supporting Creative Engagement and Open Education at the University of Edinburgh with LTW colleagues Charlie Farley and Stewart Cromar.  All three sessions went really well, with lots of questions and engagement from the audience.

How to Help Someone Use a Computer by Phil Agre

How to Help Someone Use a Computer by Phil Agre  | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

Note: This list, written in 1996 by Phil Agre is the best advice I can give people who are helping novice users with computer issues. Phil Agre was a visionary technologist and this list was up on his website forever but has been up and down lately so I am reprinting it.

Computer people are generally fine human beings, but nonetheless they do a lot of inadvertent harm in the ways they “help” other people with their computer problems. Now that we’re trying to get everyone on the net, I thought it might be helpful to write down everything I’ve been taught about helping people use computers.
