This article talks about the three pillars of educational technology and one of the key pillars is learning management systems.  The other two are social media and personal learning environments. LMS is a huge part of the pillar because in a way it ties the two and seeing as how social media is looking to incorporate LMS also.
Maria Hoard's curator insight, June 6, 2022 12:09 PM
This article establishes three pillars for educational technology.  First is an effective LMS but the other two surround the use of social media and the development of a personalized learning plan.  The connected nature of PLN's allow for current research, expansion of learning, and high quality content creation/sharing.  This is a longer read but worth it.

Social Media Has Not Destroyed a Generation - Scientific American

Social Media Has Not Destroyed a Generation - Scientific American | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

"

Anxiety about the effects of social media on young people has risen to such an extreme that giving children smartphones is sometimes equated to handing them a gram of cocaine. The reality is much less alarming.

A close look at social media use shows that most young texters and Instagrammers are fine. Heavy use can lead to problems, but many early studies and news headlines have overstated dangers and omitted context.

Researchers are now examining these diverging viewpoints, looking for nuance and developing better methods for measuring whether social media and related technologies have any meaningful impact on mental health."

How to Incorporate Social Media into Classroom Teaching - EdTechReview™ (ETR) | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

When we say that our lifestyle has changed, it tends to point towards various trends and things that have brought that difference.

The rise of social media is one of those trends, and by its nature, it appears like it’s here to stay! And its adoption is increasing regardless of a person’s age.

According to this research, by January 2019, there have been 3.4 billion active social media users around the world. Even young children, who are barely beginning to speak, want a piece of it while they are eating - they won’t open their mouth unless their favorite song is played on YouTube!

Technology has undeniably and profoundly expanded access to education in many ways. For one thing, classroom walls have dissolved in the wake of these advancements providing new ways of learning. With classroom social media, a new age of education is dawning and teachers can be a catalyst for educational change.

The use of classroom social media allows students to communicate and collaborate with other students studying or researching the same topic or lesson material. With this freedom, students tend to take more responsibility for their own learning.

4 Ideas to Help You Start a Blog and Write Consistently – | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

As many educators are either on their summer break or about to enter it, I know many are looking for great books to read.  This is great, but as we hope for our students, consumption should not be the only focus, but creation as well.  If you are looking to read, how will you connect the information you consume and dig deeper?

For this, blogging is a great tool not only to synthesize your learning but to also catalog it into a type of library.  Going through the process of writing “The Innovator’s Mindset” and finishing my second book, my blog was invaluable in finding great information from others that I had placed into my blog that I could reshare in a book.

Fame, whether based on talent or notoriety, creates expectations and turns celebrities into role models and influencers.  The upside comes with a cost--the responsibility of what you say in a social media world. Social media is the ultimate amplifier, allowing celebrities to expand audience awareness and reap the financial benefits.  If you're popular or, in the case of brands, your campaign is successful, people are hanging on your every action and that means every action is also under scrutiny.  You don't get the benefits without the downside.  In this uber-sensitive world,  it's more important than ever to look at content through the perspective and mental constructs of the audience--unless you don't care if you make them mad, hurt their feelings or offend their sensibilities.   For some people, any notoriety fills the bank accounts or gets followers.  For others, it has the opposite effect. Know your audience.

Can following a conference on Twitter substitute for attending the meeting?

How much information and insight from a conference can be gained on Twitter for those who stay home?

Over the last week, I’ve been running an experiment to answer these two questions. Instead of going to EDUCAUSE 2018 (10/30-11/2) in Denver, I followed the conference on #EDU18.

The good news, if you are an organizer and host of professional and academic conferences, is that Twitter is not a substitute for attendance. Twitter in no shape or form replicates the experience of physically attending a meeting with peers.

The Manufacture of Political Echo Chambers by Follow Train Abuse on Twitter

The Manufacture of Political Echo Chambers by Follow Train Abuse on Twitter | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

Christopher Torres-Lugo, Kai-Cheng Yang, Filippo Menczer

A growing body of evidence points to critical vulnerabilities of social media, such as the emergence of partisan echo chambers and the viral spread of misinformation. We show that these vulnerabilities are amplified by abusive behaviors associated with so-called ''follow trains'' on Twitter, in which long lists of like-minded accounts are mentioned for others to follow. This leads to the formation of highly dense and hierarchical echo chambers. We present the first systematic analysis of U.S. political train networks, which involve many thousands of hyper-partisan accounts. These accounts engage in various suspicious behaviors, including some that violate platform policies: we find evidence of inauthentic automated accounts, artificial inflation of friends and followers, and abnormal content deletion. The networks are also responsible for amplifying toxic content from low-credibility and conspiratorial sources. Platforms may be reluctant to curb this kind of abuse for fear of being accused of political bias. As a result, the political echo chambers manufactured by follow trains grow denser and train accounts accumulate influence; even political leaders occasionally engage with them.

I think that this article is very useful for me, someone who is going to be a teacher in the 21st century, since it suggest many ways to use the social media in my classes. It is a good method to connect with my students, because nowadays almost everyone uses technology, specially social networks and I could take advantage of this and use it in a good way. One of the suggestions that I found very interesting is the second one: Utilize a Facebook group to stream live talks and host conversations. I never thaught in the use of Facebook to communicate academic topics, or with my teachers, but the use of e-mail or skype might be boring for some students, and Facebook is tho most used social media, so me as teacher could use it to mantain contact with them, and also share some homework, or even give some classes there.

Snapchat has published two new reports on the habits, behaviors and key social media usage trends among Generation Z users.
Ella Goetze's curator insight, June 17, 2019 8:37 PM
I love social media don't get me wrong but these percentages/stats freak me out. It says that 55% of gen Z are more creative online then outside experiences...that should not be the case. People should be able to express themselves creatively not on the internet too. It also shows that 49% of gen Z turns to social media for creative ideas rather then talking with other individuals and bouncing ideas off of others. This is crazy, what has the world come to. We need to take in life through the outside world rather then just turning to the internet all the time. The internet and social media can be misread very often rather face to face communication cannot. Like I said social media and the internet are great but they definitely have their cons.

Does Twitter's Decline Mean The End Of The Global Town Square? | #SocialMedia  | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

Twitter has long positioned itself as the “global town square” in which the world comes together to have a shared conversation across geographic and cultural boundaries. Such was the early vision of last decade's social platforms, that they would bring us together as a society and overcome the ability of elites to dictate the global conversation. Instead, even as Twitter’s CEO touted his company’s global reach in 2013, the platform’s growth had leveled off and over the half-decade since, Twitter has shrunk almost in half, shed its vaunted geotagged resolution, centralized around an ever-older set of elite accounts and transitioned from a place to hear from the world to a place to retweet from afar. What does this mean for the future of the global town square?

The great dream of social media was that it would give everyone a voice. From heads of state to ordinary citizens, everyone, no matter where they lived, what they looked like, what their background or place in society was, would be equal. Most importantly, these social platforms would be free to publish to and consume and would not preference the wealthy and powerful over the traditionally disenfranchised.

Elites would no longer control the global conversation. We would finally have our long-elusive vision of communicative democracy.
