Five Tips to Creating a More Engaging Online Course for Adult Learners | Faculty Focus

Five Tips to Creating a More Engaging Online Course for Adult Learners | Faculty Focus | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
As society has evolved, so too has education. To meet the changing needs of our world, an explosion of online education has focused on adult learning. Adult education covers a wide range of topics, as many adult learners strive to improve their lives through professional development or changing careers (Mace and Bacon 2019).  For career fields that require hands-on work and interactions with clients, for example, online education presents a unique challenge for educating adult learners. Therefore, to reach these students, understanding appropriate educational models in an online format is essential (Diep et al. 2019). As society changes to include more online learning opportunities, the field of education must stay abreast of these shifts and use these strategies to provide the best education possible for new and longtime professionals. When teaching courses online, consider applying evidence-based strategies to improve engagement, satisfaction, and comprehension for your students of all ages. The following five tips have been developed from research geared toward pivoting live classes into effective online or blended learning courses.

For nearly four decades, Perry Samson didn’t see many students’ hands raised in his large lecture courses.

“I just assumed I nailed class and threw chalk down and did the victory dance,” says the atmospheric science professor at the University of Michigan. “In reality, they probably had questions but were afraid to ask them.”

Supporting Underprepared Students in the Online Classroom | Faculty Focus | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

Engaging students through a computer screen requires a unique approach to pedagogy and innovative course design.  The feeling of “getting it right” typically involves a good deal of testing and modification given the wide array of design formats and technology tools available, not to mention the varying needs of students, many of whom are underprepared for online learning (Bettinger & Loeb, 2017).

Common Student Challenges

In online courses, certain student challenges tend to come up time and again, which disrupts learning or impedes completing coursework on time.

100+ Ideas And Prompts For Student Blogging

100+ Ideas And Prompts For Student Blogging | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

Ronnie Burt, Sue Waters and Kathleen Morris write: "Want your students to write more in your class? Looking for prompts or ideas for student blog posts? You are in luck! This post aims to get your creative juices flowing with over 100 ideas and examples..."

Ah, the power of blogging! I read over 100 blogs thanks to the Feedly app. Right after I read this article, a teacher emailed me to ask if I could help her students create blogs--and figure out a reason for them to use them! Didn't I look like a genius when I suggested we use the types of blog posts from Ronnie, Sue and Kathleen's article and write blogs about the novel her students were reading?

This project has since morphed into a grade-level one. All 7th graders are reading the novel Tangerine as part of our new language arts curriculum. Each blog post students write has to relate to something in the novel. (There's something for everyone in this book--bullying, environmental issues, inequity in education, prejudice, sports, etc.) So, everyone is blogging and everyone is  reading and commenting on other students' blogs. Most students are used to sharing work with their classmates, but now they will share with all students in their grade!

I used this presentation to introduce the types of posts they'd be writing. I encouraged teachers to customize: give students a choice of 6-8 types of posts, limit post length, etc. I was able to get them brainstorming by asking for examples from Hatchet, a novel most of them had read in 6th grade. They were very enthusiastic! A journal post from the perspective of the moose Brian encounters? Or a sales post for a plane, slightly used and maybe moldy? A curation post on how to determine which foods in the wilderness are safe to eat? We also looked at blogs on topics that might interest them and talked about how to find and follow them.

After the presentation all students signed up for Blogger and created their blogs. We wanted a standard format for the blog addresses, so one student demonstrated on our interactive board as everyone followed along. Next up, they write, they customize their theme, they find images that are free to use and share, etc. I can't wait to see the results! And I am happy to say that several students immediately thought of ideas for personal blogs. And all this happened because I read blogs:)

Higher education students’ experiences of digital learning and (dis)empowerment | Costa | Australasian Journal of Educational Technology

Higher education students’ experiences of digital learning and (dis)empowerment | Costa | Australasian Journal of Educational Technology | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

This paper focuses on learning practices in higher education in relation to a digital participatory culture. Using key principles of critical education, the research set out to explore higher education students’ sense of agency online – or lack of it –as part of their formal learning practices. The research found that although students were proficient Web users, they did not exercise their learner agency beyond what they assumed to be expected of them, thus evidencing the stability of their learning habits in relation to the learning conventions associated with the academic field. Perhaps more surprisingly, however, is students’ perception of the Web not only as a space of student participation, but also as a space of student surveillance. Such perceptions constitute real obstacles to meaningful participation as a form of learning.

Instructor’s Corner: Nonverbal Immediacy Behaviors and Online Student Engagement

Instructor’s Corner: Nonverbal Immediacy Behaviors and Online Student Engagement | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
Marcia D. Dixson of Indiana University-Purdue University and a team of researchers conducted a study to learn more about the types of immediacy behaviors instructors should use to enhance their students’ learning.
Dennis Swender's insight:
The responses that facilitators make to individual  participants reveal a feeling tone of acceptance, encouragement, dismissal, and the like.  Participants quickly pick up on the frequency of instructor responses to individuals, the quantity of the individual responses, whether the participant response is affirmed or simply acknowledged, whether the response is genuine or general.

This is where participant demographics of race, gender, age, academic level, etc. may inadvertently be assumed to play a biased role to favor some participants more than others.

Consequently, could it sometimes help for all participants, including the facilitator, to maintain some degree of online demographic privacy - at least until the end of a course?  Or, are participant identities an important asset in responding to different perspectives?
