Using Bloom's Taxonomy In The 21st Century: 4 Strategies For Teaching

Using Bloom's Taxonomy In The 21st Century: 4 Strategies For Teaching | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Bloom’s Taxonomy can be a powerful tool to transform teaching and learning.

By design, it focuses attention away from content and instruction, and instead emphasizes the “cognitive events” in the mind of a child. And this is no small change"

Beth Dichter's insight:

But we are in the 21st century. How should we look at Bloom's today?

This post suggests four strategies to use as we look at the 21st century skills "which include persistent connectivity, dynamic media forms, information-rich (digital and non-digital) environments, and an emphasis on visibility for pretty much everything."

* Use every level

* Use asynchronous collaboration

* Allow students to BYOM

* Use Bloom's spiraling

Additional information on each of these strategies is available in the post.

As I become a better facilitator it is important to find engaging, effective and efficient methods and strategies within the classrooms of our children; as well as for all adults attending brick & mortor or  online colleges. Bloom's Taxonomy is an essential tool!

21st century Learning: Preparing Students For Complex Futures

21st century Learning: Preparing Students For Complex Futures | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

How do we prepare students for 21st century learning? The Common Core Standards call for "more rigor, complex reasoning, problem solving, and critical thinking than traditional learning." How do we teach so that students meet these new standards? What professional development will need to be done so that teachers may provides their students with the necessary skills? As the titleof the article states, "How do we prepare students for compelex futures?"

The post looks at a variety of materials that discuss skills and strategies that one might consider. In 2008 Tony Wagner suggested 7 areas that were critical for students to learn:

* Problem-solving and critical thinking

* Collaboration across networks and leading by influence

* Agility and adaptability

* Initiative and entrepreneurship

* Effective written and oral communication

* Accessing and analyzing information

* Curiosity and imagination

Materials from David Conley regarding "key cognitive strategies", Costa and Kallick and habits of mind, and other dispositions are also discussed.

The last section of the post looks at "a new paradigm: on-going, formative, self-assessment."

How To Engage With Active Learners In The Classroom | Edudemic | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Students are currently enjoying the last gasps of summertime in most countries right now. They’re outside, engaging in social activities, and constantly on the move. So what would happen if these students were thrown into a slow-moving and old-fashioned classroom? The students would get distracted, disconnected, and feel lost.'

This post explores the term "digital native" and has a short video that may get you "more excited about engaging active learners."

* Kids need guidance in this area as they need guidance in many areas;

* Who knows what's coming...we do not know the future, but we need to have skills that help us;

* The genie is out of the bottle and to be a citizen in the 21st century requires skills, such as how to find and evaluate information online...

Do Not Tell Me You Do Not Have Time...A Poetic Plea

Do Not Tell Me You Do Not Have Time...A Poetic Plea | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Do not tell me
You do not have time.
You cannot complete the assignment
Or come to training
Or take a course
Or read a blog
Or expand your own learning
Because . . .

Tim Holt has written a poem that "recounts many of the “excuses” he’s heard from teachers about why they can’t more fully engage in shifting their instruction to meet the needs of 21st century learners. He reminds teachers that they’d likely not accept a similar explanation from their own students."

Take the time to also read the comments below the poem.

21st-Century Learning Tools: Interactive Visual Dictionaries

21st-Century Learning Tools: Interactive Visual Dictionaries | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"...explore the expanding genre of interactive multi-media visual dictionaries by looking at two very different options. The first by Merriam-Webster and QA International, the Visual Merriam-Webster; the second is Visuwords."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Along with the visual dictionary by Miriam-Webster and Visuwords (one view seen above) there is also a link to a great site called Vocabahead. Vocabahead provides words lists for students from 6th grade through 11th grade. You can also get the top 300 SAT words and a Master List. What makes this different is that you select a word and a visual screencomes up with an illustration and the definition is read to you. There is also a sentence at the bottom of the screen that provides a sentence so you can hear the word in context. With over 12,000 words chances are you will learn new ones. You can also take quizzes, share word lists, track performance and more! All these tools are free, and Vocabahead also has an apps for Androids and iPhones.

Zac Hawkins’ Plea for Classroom BYOD - The Voice of a Student | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Quoting from Zac:

On the first day of English class our teacher said something along the lines of "we use iPads and technology a great deal in this class." I was ecstatic about this and couldn't help but think to myself: "Awesome, this (English class) should be easy enough."

I couldn't bring myself to take the concept of using technology in the class seriously--more than likely because I've been taught all of my life that technology is not meant for the clasroom..."
