Can You Measure an Education? Can You Define Life’s Meaning?

Can You Measure an Education? Can You Define Life’s Meaning? | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
It's time to step back and think deeply about the purpose of education.
Beth Dichter's insight:

Today our schools are "obsessed with measurement." We take many hours of each school year testing our students. This post questions the value of this "obsession" noting that "children have become pawns in contests that pit parent against parent, teacher against teacher, school against school, and nation against nation in the struggle to see who can squeeze the highest test scores out of their kids."

It explores the questions "What is education? What is its purpose" and "Is it quantifiable?" by looking at the roots of education and how education has changed. If you want some food for thought on these issues this is a great post to read.

Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight, January 5, 2013 11:10 AM

Fine article from Dr. Peter Grey that ask us to think about what education is truly about and rethink the current trend toward teaching for testing success. Wasn't sure if this didn't better fit under my austerity topic rather than education..

Empathy In Creativity and Design Thinking

Empathy In Creativity and Design Thinking | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
RSA Animate recently released a video called 'The Power of Outrospection'. The video intrigued me and this post has helped me pull together some of my thoughts about the links between empathy and creativity.
The post explores empathy in a variety of fields, including design, human services, and the creative fields, and the video is also embedded in the post. Take the opportunity to read the post, watch the video, and ponder how empathy allows us to be creative as we look for new solutions for whatever issues we face.

The Four P’s of Creativity: Products, People, Processes & Press

The Four P’s of Creativity: Products, People, Processes & Press | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Many creativity research programs are narrowly focused on one aspect of creativity to the exclusion of others; an integrative focus will help move the field forward.

This post asks a variety of questions about creativity (quoting from post below):

* What is (a) creative (product)?
* How is creativity achieved (the process)?

* Who is creative/what makes someone crative (the person)?

* What conditions (historically/everyday) are conducive to creativity (the press)?

These questions are then explored, with information form a variety of other sources included.

Recent articles in the news have suggested that creativity in childen is decreasing. This post provides a look at this issue from perspectives that may be new to you as well as the author's perspective on "what factors are necessary for Genius."

Growing Up With Mobile Technology Dampens Your Emotional Radar

Growing Up With Mobile Technology Dampens Your Emotional Radar | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Right now is one of those peculiar moments in human development where generations can be divided into a before-and-after category with regard to a significant development in technology. Immediately, all people alive these days will fall into one of two categories: knowing only a life with the presence of the mobile technology, and those who can still remember the analog days of phone books and newspapers printed on actual paper...The study found that Digital Natives switch their attention between media platforms (i.e. TVs, magazines, tablets, smartphones or channels within platforms) 27 times per hour, about every other minute."

A Baker’s Dozen: 13 Ways to Ignite the Motivational Flame | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Not all kids are equally motivated. Students vary tremendously in their motivation, even at an early age. Here is a baker's dozen of motivational strategies that can re-ignite the motivational flame.
Beth Dichter's insight:

How often do you struggle with a student, trying to motivate them to be engaged? The author of this post states "I pirate much of my thinking about motivation, kids’ achievement and success in life from my work with young, elite soccer players." He goes on to say that motivation that is found with young soccer players is also found with students in the classroom, that it "makes a real difference." He also provides a short historical background before sharing 13 motivational techniques, with explanations that explain why some techniques do not work for some children.

Psychologically speaking, gaming may be good for you (infographic) | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"We’ve all heard the horror stories about how hardcore gaming makes us anti-social and possibly even homicidal. There are politicians, activists, and shrinks around the world who say gaming is the way to the dark side, that it’s a path to evil, that Anakin Skywalker became a sith because he was a closet gamer, and that every mass murderer in the last 20 years can be attributed to being a gamer. What if the exact opposite is actually true?"

Check out this infographic  that discusses social benefits of gaming...
