Infoviz Education: Animated Visualizations for Kids

Infoviz Education: Animated Visualizations for Kids | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"We love infographics. We love animation. And we’re all for engaging kids in creative education. So today we’re looking at three educational infoviz animations that shed light on complex or important issues in beautifully art-directed ways that make little eyes widen and little brains broaden."

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you are looking for three great infographics that are animated this post is for you.

The first video is 'How to Feed the World' and explores "the science behind eating and why nutrition is important." The suggested ages are 9 - 14.

The second video, 'The Story of Stuff' is a fascinating look at "the entire materials economy." This is a longer video (just over 20 minutes) but it provide a great base for a classroom discussion. If you  click  through to their website you will find many other videos that have been created including 'Story of Bottled Water', 'The Story of Solutions' and 'Story of Electronics.'

The third video is 'Meet the Elements,' a "wonderful animated journey across the periodic table."

There is a fourth video but it is not necessarily appropriate for students (at least younger students). This one is a reinterpretation of LIttle Red Riding Hood.

If you know of some great videos for teachers to use share them by leaving a comment!

Thanks to Richard Byrne for sharing this website. This film provides a look at climate change over the last 800,000 years in 2.5 minutes! The movie has graphs, images and narration and there is a text version that you may access that provides information on the sources. European Cave Art: Was It The Earliest Form of Cinema?

European Cave Art: Was It The Earliest Form of Cinema? | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Marc Azéma, a French archaeologist and filmmaker, has come up with a pretty novel theory. Maybe the earliest cave paintings, created some 30,000 years ago at sites like Chauvet, weren't static creations.

This post from Open Culture includes a short film that shows cave paintings as a "sequential story." There is also a short audio interview with Chauvet.

Financial Literacy Through Infographics & Animations

Financial Literacy Through Infographics & Animations | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Financial literacy is about much more than balancing one's (online) checkbook. Financial literacy represents a cross-curricular mindset, a sophisticated understanding of how money, media, and messaging unite in the public sphere."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Can we teach students in elementary and middle school the concepts of financial literacy? With the right resources the answer would be yes.

ASIDE has provided a range of excellent resources in this post. You will find an excellent infographic that covers the Story of Money, beginning with bartering animal hides and teeth as well as shells up to a gold coin minted in Australia in 2011 that weighs (take a breath) 2,231 pounds. (There is a great math problem to be solved.)

A number of videos are also provided. One looks at student debt and one is a TED-Ed video.

There are also additional resources provided.

Financial literacy is an important concept for students to learn, and I would think the earlier they understand the concepts the better off they will be. To learn more click through to the post.

The Student-Centered Classroom - Liberate Learners To Flip Their Own Lessons

The Student-Centered Classroom - Liberate Learners To Flip Their Own Lessons | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"The expanded availability of easy tech tools has empowered educators to rethink homework and daily instruction. Flipping the classroom with teacher-made videos allows students to self-direct their at-home learning. Many of these clips, however, still involve a one-day delivery of information, from teacher to student. Another approach is to allow children to make their own educational videos. They can enlighten their classmates with their creations, and they can teach themselves the material and the skills during the process of production."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Have you considered having students use the Adobe Voice app (iPad) to create materials that others may use to review work? This post shares how one school has done this with 8th grade students and provides 3 videos embedded in the post as well as a link to a page where you can see more student work.

The post also discussed "four key proficiencies" that students may demonstrate as they create an Adobe Voice video:

* Symbolic and visual metaphor - in choosing images and/or icons  and their definitions of words students are demonstrating understanding of figurative meaning.

* Narrative - students narrate their story and provide images that seamlessly move from one point to another within the story.

* Text- students select key text, highlighting vocabulary.

* Design - students learn critical elements necessary to convey content. Elements may include, music, images, voice, color, transitions, layout and more.

8 Types of Learning Events You Need to Have in Your Classroom

8 Types of Learning Events You Need to Have in Your Classroom | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
A good eLearning course requires the right combination of learning events. But what are these exactly?
Beth Dichter's insight:

Although this infographic is geared to eLearning courses the same types of learning events should also be found in the classroom that is face2face.

The eight learning events discussed are:

* Imitation

* Reception

* Guidance

* Exploration

* Experimentation

* Creation

* Self-Reflection

* Debate or Animation

Does your classroom incorporate these learning events? Do you have strengths in some areas asn weaknesses in others? Do your students demonstrate strengths or weaknesses that might suggest different activities? eLearning is something that many forecast as happening in public schools over the next 3 to 5 to 10 years. Considering these eLearning events today may prepare us to be better teachers tomorrow.

50 Resources to Use Animation as a Teaching Tool

50 Resources to Use Animation as a Teaching Tool | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

Have you asked yourself how can I combine education and animation "together to teach students everywhere, everything they ever wanted to know"?

This post provides resources in two areas:

* Resources for "creating original animation or using animation tools to create lessons"

* Resources for "animated lessons that are already completed and set to share"The first list has seventeen tools many of which are free. In the second list you will find thirty-three resources and the majority are free.
carldowse's curator insight, January 17, 2014 4:39 AM

It's useful that two different approaches and types of resource are offered here - definitely worth exploring as animation appeals to most learners - busy executives included!

5 Real Benefits of Using Animation in the Classroom

5 Real Benefits of Using Animation in the Classroom | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Some teachers are a little torn over the use of animation in the classroom – lots love it but sometimes people feel it can be a time-consuming waste of precious classroom hours, with students spending a long time perfecting something that they don’t believe has huge educational value. In fact, there are fantastic concrete reasons to take advantage of the massive range of animation tools out there specifically for use in a teaching environment. Here are just some of them!"

Beth Dichter's insight:

I  watch students go the library and many immediately head towards graphic novels. Have you considered letting students use tools that allow them to create animated characters with the caveat that they must also write a story (perhaps informational text).

This post looks at five online tools you might use as well as five reasons to use the tools. The tools include Domo, Kerpoof, Anim8tor (a tool that "allows students to use algebraic and calculus functions to create 3D animations"), Zimmer Twins and Go Animate 4 Schools. Think about how these tools will assist students with communication skills, building bridges, self-expression, technical skills and presentation skills. * Animation Deck (an iPad app available in a lite or paid version)

* Draw Island

* Wideo.co
