7 Social Media Strategies Every Teacher Needs to Learn Today and Teach Tomorrow

7 Social Media Strategies Every Teacher Needs to Learn Today and Teach Tomorrow | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Students are curating content and impacting the world. Help them make the right choices with these 7 social media strategies.
Beth Dichter's insight:

Today our students are online and often are not thinking about what they post, and the long-term impacts of their digital tattoo. In fact, teachers must also think about these same issues. This post looks at seven choices to consider:

* Think before you share (a message that Common Sense Media shares a 'think before you post' in a video for tweens and up that was put out by Flocabulary).

* Never respond in anger

* Understand the long term impact of your social shares

* Ask, "Why am I liking or retweeting this?"

* Avoid confrontation

* Try for the "Warm and Fuzzy" reward

* Change the world

Additional information is available in the post, and consider sharing this information with your students next year.

Teaching & Learning Visualisations- Essential Mindsets

Teaching & Learning Visualisations- Essential Mindsets | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

Ross Parker has posted another infographic that ties into an earlier one (that looked at Style Comparison and was posted in this Scoop.it). This one looks at mindsets and how there are similarities today in the mindsets of teachers and students. He states "The two visualisations below are part of an ongoing attempt to define my views on education, and make these accessible to my students, fellow teachers, parents and leaders."

If you click through to the post you will also see the first infographic and you may download them in a variety of formats.

Annotate the Web with Popcorn Maker | screencast tutorial - The Digital Shift

Annotate the Web with Popcorn Maker | screencast tutorial - The Digital Shift | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Popcorn Maker, a tool for enhancing and remixing Web video from Mozilla, holds a lot of potential for educators, according to Linda W. Braun. The library consultant and educator, who created an earlier tutorial on make-your-own infographics, takes the free, browser-based application for a spin in the following screencast."

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you have wanted to learn how to use Popcorn Maker check out this video tutorial. Learn how to use the drag and drop, insert text, images, Google maps and more. Final projects may be shared (that does require that you create a log-in) and embedded in web pages. Braun's final comment is "“For school and public librarians, teachers, and parents who work with kids and teens, there are a lot of possibilities."

Part One… 12 Resources to Discover & Curate Digital Curriculum

Part One… 12 Resources to Discover & Curate Digital Curriculum | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

This is the first post in a series on resources to discover and curate digital curriculum. In this post Michael Gorman introduces three tools in depth: Symbaloo, Diigo and Evernote.

"This series is really not centered on all the amazing resources available, but rather how to we find quality material and how do we archive it so we can find it later."

Although you may be aware of these three tools Gorman many show you techniques to using them that are new. The post explores these tools with both the teacher and student in mind. Based on your AUP these tools have the potential to be used by both groups.

If you wonder why you would want your students to become digital curators think about how it would require them to "be informed and practice proper digital citizenship."

Deisy Bazan's curator insight, January 30, 2021 11:59 PM

Great information about curating tools! Very well elaborated!

A Curator's Code - Honoring Discovery thru a Code of Ethics

A Curator's Code - Honoring Discovery thru a Code of Ethics | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"As both a consumer and curator of information, I spend a great deal of time thinking about the architecture of knowledge. Over the past year, I’ve grown increasingly concerned about a fundamental disconnect in the “information economy”: In an age of information overload, information discovery — the service of bringing to the public’s attention that which is interesting, meaningful, important, and otherwise worthy of our time and thought — is a form of creative and intellectual labor, and one of increasing importance and urgency. A form of authorship, if you will...."

Elad Blog: How Pinterest Will Transform the Web in 2012: Social Content Curation As The Next Big Thing | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

The most interesting wave hitting the social web in 2012 is social curation. This was kicked off in 2011 as Pinterest's growth was noticed by Silicon Valley and a number of companies quickly followed suit - Snip.It launched as a social information curation platform, Quora adopted boards for a similar purpose, and Fab.com launched a structured social commerce feed.

edshelf - Socially curated directory of education technology

edshelf - Socially curated directory of education technology | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
A socially curated directory of websites, mobile apps, desktop programs, and electronic products for teaching and learning.
Beth Dichter's insight:

Edshelf is a great tool for teachers and learners, and it needs help from those who use it, or those who might want to use it in the future. Joyce Valenza, who write NeverEndingSearch, wrote an excellent post that describes the issues that edshelf is confronting, #saveedshelf: a new model. Helping the developers on our team.

It is rare that I advocate for people to support a tool that requires payment, but in this case it is a great tool, and there are some who will choose to support it. This link goes to a Kickstarter campaign that has been started. It includes a video where the founder describes how edshelf started, and unsolicited feedback about the value of this product. If you have used edshelf, or think you would like to in the future, consider making a donation.

Resources for Digital Learning - The Digital Shift

Resources for Digital Learning - The Digital Shift | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

Librarians are amazing resources and The Digital Shift is the "home for all technology-related stories and features published by 'Library Journal' and 'School Library Journal'." For Digital Learning Day they published a list of resources that are focused on digital learning, organizing them into the following categories:

* Research/Curation

* Ebooks/Reading

* Common Core

* Online Tools

* Apps

* The Big Picture

These posts are written many people, including Richard Byrne (FreeTech4Teachers) and Joyce Valenza (NeverEndingSearch). I have posted a few of this articles here but there are many others that I have found valuable listed in this post. Have fun checking them out and finding new resources!

Content curation...a term that is often heard in education today...but what is content curation? Why do we curate? Is there a value for teachers and/or students? is there a benefit? This article explores these questions and many more, providing a table that compares collecting vs. curating content.

How To Easily Make Your Own Textbook | Edudemic

How To Easily Make Your Own Textbook | Edudemic | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

With information being ubiquitous, I believe that teachers can (and should) take control of their courses by creating their own interactive textbooks. It might seem like a daunting task but the availability of quality materials online and the power of tapping into personal learning networks should make this a worthwhile learning journey.
