In the 2014-15 school year the new assessment tests from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (Smarter Balanced) will become the standard for most states. Today DLN, iNACOL and Getting Smart launched a myth busting paper focused on online learning as part of the DLN Smart Series.

Digital Learning Now issued their 8th white paper in their Smart Series, Online Learning: Myths, Reality and Promise. This paper looks at online learning and addresses the misconceptions that arise for teachers, students and the educational system.

In addition to the white paper you may also download an Executive Summary and an infographic.

The infographic addresses ten steps necessary to start an online program, including:

* Consider partners

Digital Learning Now has released their 2012 Digital Learning Report Card. This report looked at 10 areas to create an overall score for each state. The image above is of an interactive map that allow you to see how each state scored on each of the 10 areas.

The 10 areas that are scored are: Student Eligibility, Student Access, Personalized Learning, Advancement, Quality Content, Quality Instruction, Quality Choices, Assessment and Accountability, Funding and Delivery. 

You click on your state and each area will be scored, as well as a final score provided. A quick look at the image above tells you that there is room for improvement for most states.

What would happen if education shifted away from the cohort system that is used to one based on competency? This report looks at this issue in depth. Perhaps the first question to ask is what is competency education? 

"CompetencyWorks defines competency education as a system of education, often referred to as proficiency or mastery based, in which students advance upon mastery. Competencies include explicit, measurable, transferable learning objectives that empower students. Assessment is meaningful and serves as a positive learning experience for students. Students receive timely, differentiated support tailored to their individual learning needs. Learning outcomes include the application and creation of knowledge, along with the development of important skills and dispositions."
