7 Ways Teaching Has Changed

7 Ways Teaching Has Changed | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Teachers are the arbitrators of knowledge and culture.

Knowledge and culture are each dynamic, endlessly crashing and churning.

This makes teaching significantly important and difficult work, and can leave teaching—as a craft—wide-eyed and nonplussed in response.

Worse, those outside the bubble of education can understandably struggle to understand the problem.

What are the teaching in those schools anyway? How is it any different from when I was in school?"

Beth Dichter's insight:

How has teaching changed? Below are the seven key ideas. .

1. A culture of emerging literacies

2. A society that is mobile

3. A world where equity is a central theme

4. A society of constant connectivity

5. A world where the technology learns, too

6. A context that demands new credibility in an era of information

7. A culture that can seem, well, distracted

Many teachers may be overwhelmed with these changes and may require professional development to help them develop new skills that technology brings. But change has happened before and will continue to happen. The question is how are we adapting to the changes and how can we assist our students in becoming independent  learners in this new age of learning?

Emerging, Engaging, Extending and Empowering, that is wonderful! Technology can be used across the board, and definitely empowers/self-directs. You're right they do line up.

What Tech in Schools Really Looks Like — The Digital Shift

What Tech in Schools Really Looks Like — The Digital Shift | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"'The future is here,' William Gibson once quipped. 'It’s just not evenly distributed.' Gibson, the sci-fi writer who coined the term 'cyberspace' back in 1982, could easily have been describing the state of technology in today’s K–12 classrooms. Sure, there are lots of stories about schools adopting the very latest digital devices...But stories like these don’t represent what’s happening in most of our nation’s schools. In fact, the distribution of technology in our classrooms remains radically uneven..."

The Next Fifty Years In Technology: Here's What's Coming! | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
What will the next fifty years bring in the world of social media, mobile, robotics and more? Our fifty year timeline shows you just what could be in store
Beth Dichter's insight:

Technology changes at such a rapid rate that it is tough to look ahead and envision where it will be in five years let alone fifty years...but that is what this infographic does. This timeline focuses on digital and mobile as well as big data, and references are provided for the information.
Check it out and see if you agree or disagree.

Gary Faust's curator insight, May 22, 2013 10:01 PM

Very interesting. Product development is possible, but the human brain has capabilities that a computer sill not surpass in that time. I doubt we understand the human brain sufficiently at this time to speculate about a computer's comparitive ability. Good ideas for science fiction writers, though.

Younger Americans’ Reading and Library Habits

Younger Americans’ Reading and Library Habits | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
More than eight in ten Americans ages 16-29 read a book in the past year, and six in ten used their local public library. Many say they are reading more in the era of digital content, especially on their mobile phones and on computers.

This report by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project examines how readers (age 16 - 29) "encounter and consumer books in different formats." There are many findings in this report and three are listed below (quoted):

* 83% of American between the ages of 16 and 29 read a book in the past year. Some 75% read a print book, 19% read an e-book, and 11% listened to an audio book.

* Many of these young readers do not know they can borrow an e-book from a library, and a majority of them express the wish they could do so on pre-loaded e-readers.

* High schoolers (age 16 -17) are especially reliant on their library for their reading and research needs...College age-adults (ages 18 - 24) show interesting shifts in their reading habits compared with high schoolers. They have the highest overall reading rate of any age group...Adults in their late twenties (ages 25 - 29) exhibit different patterns when compared with younger age groups.

Many more facts on reading habits, how e-content affects reading habits, and other areas related to reading are also covered.

Smartphones Are Turning Us Into “Real-Time Information Seekers & Problem Solvers” | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Do you regularly use your cell phone to coordinate meetings, solve an unexpected problem, decide which restaurant to eat at, look up the score of a sporting event, check traffic, call help in an emergency situation or find information to help settle an argument? These activities make you a “just-in-time” cell user according to the latest study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The Magic of Going Mobile: Augmented Reality, Design Thinking and the Power of Place | Spotlight on Digital Media and Learning

The Magic of Going Mobile: Augmented Reality, Design Thinking and the Power of Place | Spotlight on Digital Media and Learning | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

David Gagnon is talking to a group of educators about how to use mobile devices for learning. In his work as an instructional designer with the University of Wisconsin’s ENGAGE program, Gagnon has given this workshop many times. But these days, he says, things are starting to change.

“How many of you are currently using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch?” Gagnon asks the teachers... What happens next demonstrates how the availability of communications technology has grown exponentially in recent years: 89 percent of this group owns a mobile device, and they want to know how to use it in their classrooms...
