Incredibox - v4 - Express Your Musicality

Incredibox - v4 - Express Your Musicality | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Express your musicality on Incredibox with the fourth version called "Love". Create your mix, record it, share it a lot to make it to the TOP 50! Pump it up and chill ;)
Beth Dichter's insight:

If you have not checked out Incredibox head over to the website and have fun creating an a cappella group with animated beat box singers.

This version provides new sounds, and you may still access previous versions.

This is a great tool to allow students to create music, and could be used to create a track where students would add words, possibly to teach others in the class about a subject they are learning. .

Listen, Compose, and Play Music on SFS Kids

Listen, Compose, and Play Music on SFS Kids | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"On SFS Kids students can learn to compose and play music. Your students can jump into any section of SFS Kids and start learning, but it is probably best if they work through the sections in order. Students get started on SFS Kids by listening to samples of different styles of music performed by the symphony."

Beth Dichter's insight:

SFS Kids looks like a great site to help students learn about music. They may listen to a variety of styles, learn about instruments found in an orchestra and then put their hand to composing after completing some lessons, learn the skills of a conductor and more. Richard Byrne states that this site would work well with students in elementary and middle school.

Does Music Makes You Smarter »Infographic - Online College Search

Does Music Makes You Smarter »Infographic - Online College Search | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Studies show that music has a strong effect on your mood levels and emotions, and also on how you think and your general intelligence. The music you listen to can have a profound effect on your test scores and your ability to quickly process information. And if you’ve ever played an instrument, studies show that you’re already ahead of the curve. Playing an instrument is a great way to test out your creative thinking and push your brain to process information in a new way. The following infographic takes a look at the notion that whether you’re listening or playing, a little music can go a long way."

Daniel's curator insight, November 19, 2013 1:18 PM

I find this to be a very intersting piece of information.  I have seen almost everywhere that I have been looking that music education and playing music regularly is a good thing.  It has the ability to effect our emotions and mood levels and can be a very powerful thing.  It can even effect how we think.  It activates the creativity in our brain and pushes us to new heights both creatively and cognitively.  I see this as a great reason to continue my study of music in college.  I think that a music education and just music in general is a very valuable thing.  Because I have seen things like this and experienced it first hand for myself,  I will be continuing my studies into college and beyond.  This also shows me that it is great to study even if I do not plan in majoring in it because just the act of making music engages the brain.  I do not need to be a music major to do that and this has helped me to realize that the music minor program might be right for me so that I can still participate in it while getting another degree instead of focsing on music full time.

Unpacking the Science: How Playing Music Changes the Learning Brain

Unpacking the Science: How Playing Music Changes the Learning Brain | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Researchers in the fairly new field of music neuroscience are finding that kids who learn to play a musical instrument also develop important skills related to literacy, math and mental focus.
Beth Dichter's insight:

Does learning to play an instrument impact other abilities of students? Based on recent research the answer would be yes. What  abilities?  "Speech perception, the ability to understand emotions in the voice and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously." We might speak of these as executive functioning skills. One quote from the post:

“There are a lot of different brain systems involved in successfully playing even a small musical piece: your auditory system, your motor system, your emotional system, your executive function system; this playing together of these brain regions, almost like in a musical ensemble.”

Learn more about how playing an instrument may impact the brain as well how music may change brain plasticity (using the acronym OPERA to describe it) and how literacy might be tested through music.

If your school has a music program this post will provide evidence to support the continued funding of the program, and if your school is considering adding music instruction it would also provide support.

The impact of music and cognitive ability

Justin Harrison's curator insight, November 11, 2018 10:48 PM
This article is a very insightful one. it furthers the proof of music helping the brain in not only adult brains but children as well. It explains that music helps children learn literacy skills as well as boosting their brain development. The resource is reliable because of it being an organization. Although it is not a website for music and audio professionals it supports the use of music to help in the development of children brains.

Exploratorium's Experience Experts Deliver Awesome iPad App

Exploratorium's Experience Experts Deliver Awesome iPad App | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

The Exploratorium has just "released Sound Uncovered, its second free iPad app, which the creators showed me during a visit to the unfinished museum. As I explored the app's exhibits, the tablet disappeared in my hands. When you launch this app, you're in the museum, no matter where you are...It takes 40 years of user experience wizardry to build a museum app this amazing."

Beth Dichter's insight:

The Exploratorium now has two free apps for the iPad. The first one released is Color Uncovered and now Sound Uncovered. According to this post "both "buffet-style" collections of short, multi-sensory exhibits. You can select from a table of contents or swipe through like a magazine. The first was Color Uncovered, which uses properties of the tablet's display to demonstrate properties of light. The new app, Sound Uncovered, uses both the speakers and microphones, as well as text and video explanations, to show off some of the surprisingly bizarre properties of sound."

I have found many wonderful resources on the Exploratorium website, and suspect that both these apps would be great to have on iPads used in schools.
