Wonder - A New Search Engine by Experts in the Field

Wonder - A New Search Engine by Experts in the Field | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Wonder is a research engine fueled by experts. Explore results contributed by real people, and let our research network filter for you. It's like scanning the bookshelves of people you admire, and having a librarian help you."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Check out this new search engine called Wonder. Wonder is a 'human-centric' search engine. People who are knowledgeable in the field recommend resources. In fact, if you have a special area you need researched you may enter a 'ticket' explaining what you are looking for and researchers will "email you back high quality resources ASAP."

The search engine is free to use, but you must create a log-in (three choices available).

Once you enter your search terms items will appear with a small visual and some text. You may choose to save any item (and like or share an item). You may also request additional information (see note above) and the list of contributors is viewable allowing you to filter results by reviewer.

There are so many websites that students find that are not the best. This search engine would be great for students still learning how to search, or as a way to potentially see if the sites they find are also listed by Wonder. Take some time to explore and consider sharing this with students (I would suggest high school, and possibly middle school).

Leap.it - A New Visual Search Engine

Leap.it - A New Visual Search Engine | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Leap.it - a whole new take on search. What are you looking to discover? Try it now!
Beth Dichter's insight:

A new search engine is now available. It is called Leap.it and as the image above shows, it is a more visual search engine than many. You can use the search engine as is, or you can create an account which allows you some additional privledges, including the ability to create a "perspective" where you can bring together a variety of sites in one location.

When reviewing the Terms and Conditions it is clear that students under 13 may not use the app without permission from parents. For more information on this issue take the time to read the Terms and Conditions.

Free Technology for Teachers: Symbolab - A Scientific Equation Search Engine | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Are you looking for a scientific equation search engine? If so check out Symbolab, a search engine that is semantic. Richard Byrne states "rather than just searching the text of your query Symabolab attempts to interpret and search for the meaning of your query" and he suggests you think of "Symbolab as a cross between Google and Wolfram Alpha."

Slikk - Search Multiple Sites at Once - Share Results and Much More

Slikk - Search Multiple Sites at Once - Share Results and Much More | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Slikk is the new search engine with revolutionary features that let you Find It Faster. Search and browse the web, pictures, news, videos, blogs and Twitter! Search various categories simultaneously and share search results!

I have been experimenting with Slikk for several months and it has quickly become one of my favorite search engines. Below are a few of the features.  I urge you to take the time and try this tool out.

Lion View allows you to browse open website simultaneously. You click on "LionV" on the top right hand of the LionWindow and like magic, the websites you have on the screen all show at once. You may choose to maximise each. This is a great tool to compare and contrast websites that may have agendas or a bias.

Slikk also allows you to search and view various types of results simultaneously. "The MultiView feature allows you to display one type of search result on the left side of the screen and another on the right side. On either side, you can choose between web, image, news, video, blog or Twitter results. For example, you can have web results on the left side and images on the right side. Or news on the left and Twitter on the right. The choice is always yours!"

There are many other features to this search engine. Take the time to take it for a test drive!

Kiddle - a Visual Search Engine for Kids

Kiddle - a Visual Search Engine for Kids | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Kiddle - search engine for kids with illustrated results and safe search.
Beth Dichter's insight:

Check out this new search engine called Kiddle. It is a visual search engine designed for children. What makes it different?

1. Most search results provide a large thumbnail. This image will help children differentiate some results.

2. The font size. Kiddle uses a large size of Ariel, a font that helps with readability.

3. Sites are filtered and are family friendly.

4. Kiddle is privacy oriented. No data is collected and logs are deleted after 24 hours.

If you work with young students, or have young children at home this search engine is worth checking out.

Meet MillionShort: The Google Hack That Could Be The Antidote To Search Engine Spam

Meet MillionShort: The Google Hack That Could Be The Antidote To Search Engine Spam | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"...web search results for certain topics are just overloaded with "search engine dummy websites with little to no valuable content, many of which have utilized “search engine optimization” (SEO) tactics...

That’s what a neat hack called MillionShort aims to help with. The website is a search engine that lets you remove the top million (or 100,000, or 10,000, or whatever) hits from the results list. It’s a lot like pruning a plant, or skimming the film off the top of a stew: MillionShort lets you remove the old or non-useful stuff from traditional web search to find new or interesting content."

One of the features is that it lists the sites that is not showing you (as seen in the right column in the image).
