Literably Is An Excellent Reading Site — If Used With Caution | Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day…

Literably Is An Excellent Reading Site — If Used With Caution | Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day… | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Literably "allows students to read a text and have it automatically assessed for accuracy and words-per-minute speed. Plus, and this is what was most surprising to me, it also provides a fairly accurate indentification of student errors — in other words, what word they said instead of the word in the text. You’re able to provide the student or parent a link to the recording. And it’s free."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Thanks for Larry Ferlazzo for sharing this website that allows teachers to choose reading and levels for students to read and saves their reading so you can come back and access it via a dashboard. You will need to register and set-up your student list.

Ferlazzo also discusses the cons of this. There is value in having one-on-one time with students when they read so you determine if they are "racing through words" or having other issues that may not be apparent through a recording.

None the less this may be a great tool for some of your students. Students do have the option of re-recording.

If superpowers were real, which would you choose? - TED-Ed

In this series, Joy Lin tackles six superpowers and reveals just how scientifically realistic they can be to us mere mortals. Lesson by Joy Lin, animation by...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Do you teach science? If so take a look at this series which looks at superpowers and explores them. The six videos explore Flight, Immortality, Invisibility, Super Strength, Super Speed and Body Mass.
There is a lesson available for each superpower that is divided into four sections: Watch (the video), Think (questions students answer - a combination of multiple choice and open answer), Dig Deeper (resources for further exploration) and Discuss (a forum is available online). You may also choose to flip the lesson and make it your own.

These are many great videos on TED-Ed that are available and we know our  students are engaged when they watch videos. Take some time to explore the videos at TED-Ed and consider using them in your classroom.

This link goes to the introductory video. If you want to see the series click on this link: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/if-superpowers-were-real-flight-joy-lin

The thinking behind the new open platform of TED-Ed

The thinking behind the new open platform of TED-Ed | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

There are so many articles and posts today on the new open platform TED-Ed...and with good reason. They state "the goal is to allow any teacher to take a video of their choice (yes, any video on YouTube, not just ours) and make it the heart of a 'lesson' that can easily be assigne din class or as homework, complete with context, follow-up questions and further resources."

This scoop will send you to a page that has a video TED-Ed Website tour; a sample of a lesson where the teacher and the animator worked together; and tools that allow you to edit headlines, introductions, questions and follow-up links.

Take the time to look at these new offerings, and realize that this is the beginning of a resource that become a key component of your tool box.

Here Are Some Questions I Use For Class Closing Activities — What Are Yours?

Here Are Some Questions I Use For Class Closing Activities — What Are Yours? | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"I've previously written about research on the importance of “good endings.” It’s a priority for me to end my classes on an upbeat note, but I’ve been thinking lately that I might be able to enhance its benefit to students if I’m a bit more intentional about it with a regular formal closing activity that might take a minute or two. I’ve certainly often done this, but I’m going to try doing it more like 70-80% of the time instead of its present 50%."

Beth Dichter's insight:

What do you use for exit slips? Larry Ferlazzo shares a number of questions he asks his students and suggests that you share yours so he may compile a list and share it on his blog. Below are a few of his questions. Can you come up with more?

* Think of one thing you have learned in class that you can apply in another class or another part of your life. What is it, and how can you apply it?

* How does something you learned today connect to what you already knew?

* How would you teach one thing you learned to your little brother or sister (even if you don’t have one)?

* What questions do you still have?

Managers can ask these questions of employees who have just returned from training. It will help them assimilate what they've learned. Ask them to share their responses with the team and everyone learns.
