Education game invokes Civilization and others to teach math

Education game invokes Civilization and others to teach math | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
The educational technology company uses game concepts to engage students while learning and targeting their weak areas in math.
Beth Dichter's insight:

Students often struggle with algebra. KnowRe is providing a free Algebra 1 game (in beta) that helps students review and learn math. This post provides an overview of KnowRe and states it is a "teaching tool that adapts to students on a personal level. It learns how well each person is understanding the concepts and adapts the curriculum based on that information."

You will also find a short video that shows how to use KnowRe and explains the components of the program.

To go directly to the KnowRe website, which bills itself as "Personalized math learning designed to help students succeed" go to https://www.knowre.com/. ;

That's brilliant. if education could be implanted into games. everybody would be so happy to learn.

Alexis's curator insight, October 3, 2013 10:17 AM

This game understands students on a personal level. It adapts to their needs and teaches math at their speed. Its a great teaching tool and targets a "trouble area" for each student so they can work on their own pace. I could definitely see myself using this in the classroom.

Do Educational Video Games Actually Work? - Online College Courses

Do Educational Video Games Actually Work? - Online College Courses | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Gaming in the classroom as a teaching tool is gaining popularity; however, some question whether or not it's actually effective.

This infographic looks at some of the information that is known about video games.

After a quick look at some statistics the infographic looks at benefits and concerns about video games and provides some resources.

Ryan McDonough's curator insight, July 7, 2014 5:55 PM

Covering the pros and cons of gaming, at least in the minds of some educators. I've covered the pros in depth here, so I'll review the concerns here. Some feel like violence in games can be a poor influence on impressionable children. Opponents claim that kids play games at home so why should they play them at school? Difficulty monitoring online activity; funding and resource allocation are also major reasons some are apprehensive over video games in school. Do I personally agree with them? No. But I was also raised in an environment that nurtured my love for gaming. Some of these questions should merit constructive conversations at the next faculty/staff meeting.

The post lists six headlines from the study, including (quoting):

* The adoption of mobile technologies on a personal basis significantly increases access to technology for students, both inside and beyond school, with many attendant benefits for learning which include greater motivation, engagement, parental involvement, and understanding of complex ideas.

 * Teachers are equally engaged by the use of a device like the iPad which has a low learning curve enabling them to use it immediately as a teaching tool and a learning tool for themselves.

Audio Becomes A Powerful Teaching Tool With SoundCloud | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
In creating the platform for sharing audio, SoundCloud has built a top teaching tool that can bring a new level of engagement to your class.
tim parks's curator insight, October 11, 2014 8:31 PM

Soundcloud is a very powerful tool. It gives people the option to post their music for anyone to hear.

Rafael San Inocencio's curator insight, October 10, 2015 10:21 AM

SoundCloud is a great source for more things than just music. While searching through soundcloud you can find podcasts and talks, so I don't see why they couldn't use it's powers for teaching, I think this is a cool idea.
