Check out this infographic that looks at how teens and tweens are using social media. It probably comes as no surprise that they are very active in the use of social media. One statistic they show is

* Surveys have found that majority or 81 percent of kids aged 12 to 17 use social media. This figure is higher than the 72 percent of internet users overall.

According to this article there appears to be a difference between what teens and kids younger than teens prefer as far as social media platforms are concerned.

Online gaming among tween girls is on the rise, as more are turning to the web to take quizzes and participate in role-playing challenges.

"A new report by tween gaming platform GirlsgoGames.com found that about 50% of tween girls between the ages of 8 and 12 are turning to the Internet for entertainment and social gaming. In addition, the amount of time tween girls spend playing games each month has more than doubled over the last year, from 38 minutes a month to 1 hour and 18 minutes."

According to an article on Mashable (http://mashable.com/2012/09/07/rocket21) the site, which works as an open forum will provide "an opportunity for kids to explore their dreams with some of the brightest minds in the world.”

The website will allow students to (quoting from the Rocket21 website):

* Learn about 21st century jobs and pursuits

* Connect with experts from a wide range of professions

* Explore the evolving range of options with STEM disciplines

* Gain an insider's view of careers ranging from engineers to musicians to teachers

* Take responsibility for exploring their own choices and futures

If you work with tweens this site is worth checking out. There are links applicable to members (as in students), educators and parents. If a child is under 13 the parent must confirm their registration.
