"Teachers are the arbitrators of knowledge and culture. Knowledge and culture are each dynamic, endlessly crashing and churning. This makes teaching significantly important and difficult work, and can leave teaching—as a craft—wide-eyed and nonplussed in response. Worse, those outside the bubble of education can understandably struggle to understand the problem. What are the teaching in those schools anyway? How is it any different from when I was in school?"

How has teaching changed? Below are the seven key ideas. . 1. A culture of emerging literacies 2. A society that is mobile 3. A world where equity is a central theme 4. A society of constant connectivity 5. A world where the technology learns, too 6. A context that demands new credibility in an era of information 7. A culture that can seem, well, distracted Many teachers may be overwhelmed with these changes and may require professional development to help them develop new skills that technology brings. But change has happened before and will continue to happen. The question is how are we adapting to the changes and how can we assist our students in becoming independent learners in this new age of learning?

"...using technology does not necessarily make a teacher effective. I am going to repeat that, because I want this to be very clear: technology is not pedagogy. I actually learned that lesson the hard way. I spent my first two months as a teacher building a paperless, hybrid-online, flipped classroom using Moodle, and marching students through standards by having them click through links and complete digital quizzes and activities."

What is the best way to use technology in your classroom? We know that students like to use technology but are they using it constructively? Are you using technology constructively? This post explores these issues, not ing that there are some right and wrong answers in how technology should be used? I believe that technology is a tool, a tool that can be used to reinforce, enhance and extend the curriculum; a tool that allows students to use critical thinking skills; to find answers to questions. How do we prepare out students to be 21st century learners? Should we focus on cool tools, or should we focus on skills? This post urges us to focus on skills. Tools come and go, but skills stay. If you question this concept look at the ISTE NETS for students, which include (and are quoted from the article): * Improving higher-order thinking skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity * Preparing students for their future in a competitive global job marke * Designing student-centered, project-based, and online learning environments * Guiding systemic change in our schools to create digital places of learning * Inspiring digital age professional models for working, collaborating, and decision making. None of these mention a specific tool. As you plan a new lesson rather than focusing on a tool, focus on the skill you want to teach. As you read the Common Core standards the ability to transfer knowledge is evident. If we teach students skills the students will know how to find the best tool!

Summary: How can we keep students focused on schoolwork with all the electronic temptations surrounding them? By engaging the students completely with our lessons, keeping students actively involved in their learning, and reflecting on our practice to avoid blaming the technology or kids’ short attention spans, in my opinion.

Is your school heading towards a Web 3.0 environment, where teachers will not only be those whom are licensed professionals but also those who are accesible on line from all parts of the worlld? This post begins with a quote from President Obama: "“The quality of math and science teachers is the most important single factor influencing whether students will succeed or fail in science, technology, engineering and math.” From this point it veers in a different direction, noting that the issue is that teachers "are not given the freedom to support children in ways that will produce the scientists and innovators our country needs." If we look to our past (and our present) we will find that we are not listening to the advice that "our nation's historic inventors, scientists, and physicists (whom have shared) their advice and experiences." Read the article to learn the experiences of Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Richard Feyman, Michio Kaku (which includes a video where he explains "that exams are crushing curiousity out of the next generation..."), as well as individuals around today such as Aaron Iba and Jack Andraka (the student who at the age of 15 created a test for pancreatic cancer). Perhaps the question we need to ask is how do we change the system to support the necessary learning?

Through a combination of text, videos and images Ira Socol explores the issue of how we might envision a world that moves beyond textbooks, asking "are there better way to do things than textbooks, like free ways for teachers, or better, students to assemble information. And these should be allowing us to fundamentally consider new ways to assembel infomation, rahter than a pre-cooked, pre-arranged text."
