User voices in the library - listening to users to create better services - Artefacto

User voices in the library - listening to users to create better services - Artefacto | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it
One of the most heartening parts of the recent Libraries Global Excellence Tour was hearing each and every speaker emphasise the importance of putting users front and centre of everything we do in libraries. This includes reimagining existing services and creating brand new ones.

In the crushing pressure to collect evidence of impact, to show usage figures that rely on legacy measurements, this can easily be sidelined. As Erik Boekesteijn described, the job of the librarian is “curating curiosity. We need to listen to our users”.

The user experience of both physical and digital spaces matters. Its inspiring to see so many libraries put this at the fore of their planning and creating services with a bit more empathy.

3 Ways of Getting Student Feedback to Improve Your Teaching

3 Ways of Getting Student Feedback to Improve Your Teaching | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it
Why You Must Reflect and Improve
Students are what we do. They are the center of our classroom, not us. However, as a teacher, I am the most impactful single person in the classroom. Honest feedback from our students will help me level up.

I've been doing this for more than ten years. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I cry -- and sometimes I'm mortified. But I can honestly say that every single piece of feedback I've received has made me a better teacher. And great teachers are never afraid of having or inviting hard conversations. This is one of best practices that has helped me to be a better, more excited teacher every year.

Student Voice is invaluable to the effectiveness of the educator.
Dr. Deborah Brennan's curator insight, April 2, 2015 10:20 AM

i agree!  As a teacher, I always sought to improve and make my classroom more effective for students.  End of year surveys helped a lot.  I also had students write letters to next year's students.  This gave me insight into how the course and classroom activities helped or hampered their learning.  summer is a great -- there is actually time to reflect.  as lessons change, there is time to do researxh and gather resources.

Teaching, no matter what topic comes up with a big responsability. We must be aware of how we provide feedback to our students, use the correct words, focus on the important mistakes but also recognizing the setrengs of put students in order to motivate them.

How To Train Yourself To Take Feedback Well

How To Train Yourself To Take Feedback Well | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it

With all the “be your best self now!” hullabaloo, we can get overwhelmed with what we think we should be doing. We can drive ourselves crazy thinking about all the things we could do to make ourselves smarter, stronger, better. Not long ago, I actually found myself surrounded by whiteboards sketching out all of my self-improvement plans for the year, kanban board style.

And while goals and growth plans are great, sometimes the best ideas for change come from an awareness outside of ourselves. I know, it sounds weird to hear a leadership coach telling you to look for something outside of yourself. I’m all about tuning into that courageous and all-knowing voice who can tout your fabulousness–it’s good stuff. But let’s get real: Sometimes the only way to get perspective about what needs to change comes from an outside perspective. Yes, believe it or not, there is often a gap between who we desire and think we are presenting to the world, and the way others see us.

Turns out that when you ask the people around you–the ones who see you in action every day and are impacted by the choices you make–where you can grow, their ideas might be a little different than your own.

The truth is, we can’t always control the feedback we receive; we can only control how we choose to accept and use it. And learning how to use it wisely can be a game changer.

If you assign writing assignments to your students, then be sure to learn how to use "suggested edits." Suggested edits is similar to "track changes" in Microsoft Word. To turn it on, simply click on the Pencil (with the words "editing" next to it) and select "suggesting." The menu will turn from grey to green.…
