Five Best Practices for Redefining the Teacher's Role

Five Best Practices for Redefining the Teacher's Role | Education | Scoop.it

"Deep learning is messy and complicated. My most fulfilling teaching days are filled with overlapping student voices, surprise, and opportunity. As I circulate around the room, I speak with young people who are grappling with challenges, generating and then revising ideas, and finding their way through the multiple stages of project creation. Depending on the day, my students may be sprawled out on the floor in groups, sitting individually and staring down their work on a screen, in quiet spaces editing video or audio, or out in the world interviewing, filming, or researching. Project-based learning transforms the roles of students and teachers in ways that benefit all. This de-centering of the classroom and of knowledge helps students develop a sense of agency as learners and as people." | by Joshua Block

Human Trafficking is becoming a BIG business | Education | Scoop.it

Attorney General | Human Trafficking Task Force

Around the country, and right here in Michigan, men, women and children are forced into prostitution, domestic servitude and other labor for little or no pay. Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery and it is the second-largest and fastest-growing criminal industry in the world. Attorney General Schuette is leading the fight against this horrific crime by prosecuting the state's first-ever criminal cases under state law banning human trafficking in Michigan.

I really think everyone should look at this if they are planning on going to college. I think some people think that you have to go to college but that's definitely not true. Some people might be able to do what they want without that education, however some will need it. But by reading this could be so important in deciding if you should go to a four year university or just a community college which could help save loads of money and really help shape your future.

What an abundance of great resources to utilize in your classroom. I personally love TimesMaps which I began to personally use last year and had my geography students begin to look into at the end of the last school year. I was amazed at the capabilities of this Google App. For those using Chromebooks or laptops, even on iPads, these apps can really enhance the learning experience visually for your students.

There's a tendency to make huge leaps from scientific research to claims in brain-based learning. This article debunks some myths.

Donna Farren's curator insight, February 25, 2015 9:15 AM

I especially like the attention paid to the fact that learning styles cannot be substantiated by research.  A lot of time and effort is wasted in narrowing down students' learning styles when it is best to use a variety anyway.

15 Lesson Plans For Making Students Better Online Researchers ~ Global Digital Citizen Foundation

15 Lesson Plans For Making Students Better Online Researchers ~ Global Digital Citizen Foundation | Education | Scoop.it
"Google is usually one of the first places students turn to when tasked with an assignment. Whether it’s for research, real-time results, or just a little digital exploration … it’s important they know how to properly Google. Lucky for teachers (and students, of course), Google has a handy set of lesson plans that are just waiting to be unleashed upon the leaders of tomorrow. "While I understand there’s a LOT more to research than just Googling, it’s important to note that this is where nearly all students start their research. Therefore, it’s a critical skill if they’re going to start down the right paths. "Below are 15 lesson plans courtesy of Google designed to make students better online researchers. They’re organized by difficulty and meant to help students (and everyone) become better online searchers."
