What do we want of our universities in the future? How should they be responding to the grand challenges and wicked problems of the 21st century? What is the role of higher education in supporting societies, cultures and economies? What are the values — as well as the value — it should seek to promote?

These and other questions are addressed by a manifesto launched this week at the House of Lords in Westminster on the purpose of universities in the 21st century: The Permeable University. It originates from the University of Lincoln, where vice-chancellor Mary Stuart has established an international lab to consider these issues.

The manifesto suggests that universities should adopt a more permeable approach to their activities, building stronger and more enduring relationships with their communities and the wider society.
