Why you don’t actually suck at maths: a Q&A with Dr Lewis Mitchell

Why you don’t actually suck at maths: a Q&A with Dr Lewis Mitchell | Educational Leadership | Scoop.it

It’s always the same conversation at parties when Dr Lewis Mitchell introduces himself as a mathematician. There is always someone in the room that says:

“I sucked at maths” or “I just don’t have a maths brain”.

"My big thesis is that people hate maths because they don't know what maths is," Mr Woo said.

"Growing up, I hated music because I was forced to play scales. I lasted 1½ years and and went, 'Thank god this torture is over' and then, when I was 17 years -old, I picked up an acoustic guitar because I wanted to play a song I heard on the radio and realised music is a joy.

"Most people never transition in their understanding of mathematics, so they're still like seven-year-old me."
