One criticism of traditional mentoring is that it teaches people how to succeed by playing by existing rules, thus reinforcing the status quo. But mentoring can also be a force for change.

Hundreds of graduate teachers in government schools will be assigned a mentor in a scheme to stop young teachers leaving the profession.
Peter Mellow's insight:
While mentors are great; you are going to get a mixed range of quality within that mentorship. To support those whose mentor is not as supportive as they could/should be, a community of practice could be set up (online) to allow new teachers to share experiences with others in the same situation as well as shared solutions. The social aspect of this online community of educators could reduce isolation within the new teaching group.

Muhlenberg College will give every freshmen student a mentor, one of many plans across the country for matching students with mentors early on.
