Check Yourself Before You Buy Exciting Tech You Don't Really Need

Check Yourself Before You Buy Exciting Tech You Don't Really Need | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Everybody wants the new shiny thing. But in the world of business, the next hot piece of tech or game-shaking idea may not be what’s best for your company. While some projects can benefit nearly every company, the majority will only aid those who put the legwork into making them truly fit your organizational needs."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

The same holds true for education. Before investing in a specific technology, ask yourself, what problem do you want to solve? Then ask, what is the best tool for solving that problem?

5 steps to a successful technology overhaul

5 steps to a successful technology overhaul | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Walk into one of our classrooms at Huntington Beach (CA) City School District right now and you won’t find a typical classroom. You’ll find groups of students working together, others working independently, and still others moving from one group to the next to discuss different topics. We’re setting the stage for the classroom of the future, where teachers will introduce a concept or an idea and then ask students to use their skill sets, interests, and knowledge to either prove or disprove that concept—and then show mastery in a way that is far more important than simply regurgitating information on a test."

Empowering All Students through Mobile Device Filmmaking

Empowering All Students through Mobile Device Filmmaking | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"If you stepped into a classroom to find a student holding up an iPad and diligently filming the action and dialogue of several other students, it would be reasonable to think you’d walked into a filmmaking class. But in the case of Anthony Stirpe’s classroom, you’d be wrong. He’s teaching English Language Arts."

How to use social media to engage Gen Z in class and beyond

How to use social media to engage Gen Z in class and beyond | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it
Colleges need to have a social media presence to attract and hold Generation Z’s attention as well as to address their academic, personal, and career needs.
Jacqueline Elizondo's curator insight, February 5, 2022 6:03 PM
Highlights how social media plays a huge part in these younger generations. I find that although social media can be a good thing, there are is still a negative side to it and those challenges should be  overcome. That said if there is an alternative site that can be monitored and be used solely for school purposes but has the similar feel that students enjoy from social media it would be great.

FBI Issues Warning on Educational Technology

FBI Issues Warning on Educational Technology | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it
As the use of educational tools continues to grow, the FBI is warning the public to be aware of the risks of data collection and unsecured systems.
Emily Perdomo's curator insight, September 20, 2018 12:21 PM
R-This website is super reliable because it is called the journal and it gives information about the issues on education. This is very interesting to me and i find it very reliable because the website is on education and web letters and any information that might change education for better or worse.
A-I feel they know what they are talking about do to the information on the site and they seem to have facts when getting the FBI involved in education and the tools and findings to education.
V-This site is responsible so if the information was false i feel the reliability would no longer be found because the information would no longer be factual and it would be seen as them not knowing their background knowledge on the topic and nothing would be believed about the source and the article found on the site.
E-They do have expertise by using teachers, principles, FBI agents, and parents. They have people involved in education, knowledge and input on what they think is the best option for this/ if they are for or against it.
N-They are for it to keep the school systems in a protected system. They feel students are a priority always and that it is important that the systems are secure.

Why Libraries Should Be Leading the OER Revolution

Why Libraries Should Be Leading the OER Revolution | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Too often, libraries are mistaken for quiet buildings filled with books and librarians who “hush” you. If this is your take on libraries, you are majorly mistaken. Today’s libraries are thriving community gathering places that house both books and open access to digital resources. Today’s librarians are highly skilled when it comes to using and reviewing digital resources. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that libraries are at the forefront of the OER revolution."

How a Multimedia Approach Helps Students Learn

How a Multimedia Approach Helps Students Learn | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"For a long time, I thought that “studying” meant rereading the same old textbook or lecture notes over and over—usually without really getting anywhere. I would nod along as I read, thinking Yep, this looks familiar. And after hours of cramming, I’d close the book and promptly forget everything. If you suspect that this study strategy isn’t the best, you’re right."
