Blended Learning Model Definitions | Christensen Institute

Blended Learning Model Definitions | Christensen Institute | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

The definition of blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns:

(1) at least in part through online learning, with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace;

(2) at least in part in a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home;

(3) and the modalities along each student’s learning path within a course or subject are connected to provide an integrated learning experience.

The focus of these scoop.it pages is networked learning. As the above definition points out, online learning is part and parcel of blended learning experiences. In some cases, the online part is of a social nature, thereby qualifying it as a form of networked learning. Apart from that, next to MOOCs blended learning is another attempt at marrying the online and the offline in learning. Although the terminology used is different, although the intentions are different (for sure if it concerns xMOOCs), there are a lot of similarities worth drawing attention to. This is particularly so since the various forms of blended learning discussed in this short scoop offer useful food for thought for those interested in furthering the evolution of MOOCs. I am thinking in particular of the à-la-carte model and the enriched-virtual model. Also, the classification is unlikely to be exhaustive and therefore provides food for the imaginative thinker.

Help or Hindrance: Blended approaches and student engagement - Ako Aotearoa

Help or Hindrance: Blended approaches and student engagement - Ako Aotearoa | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

Project Description

This project sought to identify effective strategies that teachers can use within a blended learning environment to enhance learner engagement and achievement. A mixed-method approach was used to collect and analyse data. In total, 541 participants from two North Island universities participated in this project.

Ten effective engagement strategies were identified, covering engagement at the beginning of a course, during a course, and re-engaging learners.From the project findings, five conclusions were reached:

The quality of learning depends on the depth of student engagement in the learning process.Click on the image to download the summary report (4.67mb PDF)The systematic application of all 10 engagement strategies identified in this study give teachers the best chance of achieving high levels of student engagement.The skills and effort that teachers apply to create learning experiences is the single most important determinant of the quality of the learning environment.Teachers are time-poor and lack adequate technical support and training in pedagogical principles.Blended learning can make a difference.

This project was launched at ASCILITE 2012

Blended learning in large enrolment courses: Student perceptions across four different instructional models

Blended learning in large enrolment courses: Student perceptions across four different instructional models | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
Drawing on data from five large enrolment introductory courses in a public university, we compared students’ perceptions of blended learning on design, interaction, learning, and satisfaction in four different blended models. The models, which were the result of a course redesign initiative, had different combinations of face-to-face lectures, online sessions, and small group tutorial classes. Our findings suggest that students perceived courses with fully online lectures and in-class tutorials most positively on design and overall satisfaction, while those enrolled in courses with in-class lectures and in-class tutorials, supplemented by online discussions, felt most positively about interaction. Students perceived learning in the former courses more favourably than the latter, however the differences were not statistically significant. The least preferred model overall was the one that had in-class lectures and tutorials that alternated weekly between in-class and online sessions.

Blended Learning: Creating Awesome Online Discussions

Blended Learning: Creating Awesome Online Discussions | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

Tim Robinson: If our students think that the discussion posting is useless and not at all entertaining. It likely means that it is useless and not at all entertaining. We know this because we often feel the same way when we have to make contrived discussions posts. It’s not that our jobs are about entertaining students, but we do need to do what we can do make it at least tolerable.

If we can expand our understanding of the tool to get beyond just ‘discussions’ but see it as a platform for other creative ways to explore a topic, we’ll find a much richer level of learning. We can, maybe, even have some fun with it.
