A man’s hands say a lot about him. My own father, at 66, still has the calloused, gnarled hands of a guy who did competitive weightlifting in college and spent much of his career grappling with 1,500-pound dairy cattle as a large animal veterinarian. I, on the other hand, have the soft palms of a modern-day desk jockey. My hands are delicate, well-moisturized, and prone to blisters if I spend too much time in the garden.
And I’m not the only one. A new study in press at the Journal of Hand Therapy (yes, a real thing) finds that millennial men may have significantly weaker hands and arms than men the same age did 30 years ago.
Researchers measured the grip strength (how strongly you can squeeze something) and pinch strength (how strongly you can pinch something between two fingers) of 237 healthy full-time students aged 20 to 34 at universities in North Carolina. And especially among males, the reduction in strength compared to 30 years ago was striking.
The correlation they mention between this and obesity and mortality is intriguing. -Lon

Here's some heartening news for working mothers worried about the future of their children.
Women whose moms worked outside the home are more likely to have jobs themselves, are more likely to hold supervisory responsibility at those jobs, and earn higher wages than women whose mothers stayed home full time, according to a new study. Men raised by working mothers are more likely to contribute to household chores and spend more time caring for family members.
The findings are stark, and they hold true across 24 countries.
"There are very few things, that we know of, that have such a clear effect on gender inequality as being raised by a working mother," says Kathleen L. McGinn, the Cahners-Rabb Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, who conducted the study with Mayra Ruiz Castro, a researcher at HBS, and Elizabeth Long Lingo, an embedded practitioner at Mt. Holyoke College.

While Dads in Distress (DIDs) by its very name appears to be focused mainly on supporting men through separation from their partner and/or children, we actually have the health, safety and well-being of ALL the family uppermost in our mind. As a harm-prevention charity it saddens us that in our modern society of Australia there are men, women and children who are being harmed, and harming one another, in the very place where love and kindness should prevail. As a peer support organisation, we encourage each other to keep in contact with our children no matter how hard that can be. Inevitably those children will want to know their dad. We also encourage men to continue with emotional and financial support of their families for the sake of their children.

The social norms of masculinity play an important role in the gender differences of suicide. Men have a greater tendency not to recognise or respond to their own negative emotions or distress, partly due to the stigma associated with 'mental health', which in turn may result in clinical depression. Through tackling the rate of depression and anxiety in men, and reducing stigma, facilitating a change in men's behaviour and challenging perceptions of masculinity, beyondblue believes that a reduction in the male suicide rate can be achieved in the medium to long term.

Having grown up without my biological father actively in my life, I can certainly relate to some of the challenges discussed in the article. I'm especially thankful that I grew up with generous, loving surrogate Dads - uncles, my best friend's dad, and my big brother - who stepped in to fill the role.
Thank goodness for you fathers out there!

When I was growing up, stay-at-home moms were the norm, and many American household budgets were based on one income. A lot has changed since then, but there are still many parents who choose to leave their job and stay at home with the kids.
