"Today the European Parliament agreed on a new Directive on the rights guaranteed to victims of crime in the EU. Notably, it provides specific assistance and protection to people who suffered crime because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression..."
The law protects individuals based on "... personal characteristics of the victim such as his or her age, gender and gender identity or expression, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, health, disability, residence status, communication difficulties, relationship to or dependence on the offender and previous experience of crime."
Europe deserves a medal for this. Passing a law that protects individuals based on gender identity and sexual orientation is a step in the right direction for accptence in the eyes of the world.
