"Spain’s largest and most powerful regions have joined street protesters in opposing central government proposals to severely restrict abortion while citing hard-hitting editorials from the world’s media, including The Times.
“It’s annoying to see international newspapers showcase Spain as an example of what not to do when it comes to women’s freedom and rights,” said Susana Díaz, president of the government in Andalucia, Spain’s most populous region."

Three women who were forced to travel to Britain to terminate their pregnancies following diagnoses that their babies would not survive outside the womb are taking their cases to the United Nations.
Amanda Mellet, Ruth Bowie and Siobhain Murphy, members of the Terminations for Medical Reasons (TFMR) group, will hold a press conference in Dublin on Wednesday outlining their cases.
On the same day papers will be filed in Geneva with the UN’s Human Rights Committee, which monitors member states’ compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The women will allege that the fact they were forced to leave Ireland to terminate their pregnancies – following diagnoses of fatal foetal abnormalities – amounted to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.

The Spanish government has backed a proposal for a tougher abortion law. The bill says early termination is no longer a right, and would only be allowed in cases of rape, serious foetal deformity, or when the mother's health is at risk. Pro-choice groups have pledged to stage protests against the change, which will be debated in parliament.
