Emerging OER research discipline

Emerging OER research discipline | Everything open | Scoop.it
The Primordial soup of OER…

One of the things I’ve become increasingly interested in is how the OER discipline emerges. Having lived through it, you get to see the field evolve. I’m not sure it counts as a field, subject, discipline, or whatever. Is it part of a new open education discipline? Is there a unifying field at all? These are general questions I have, but one I was also interested in, was what themes have emerged in research over the years?

Ruminations on Research on Open Educational Resources | Hewlett Foundation

"This paper explores nine areas of research on OER from policy to development to its relative effectiveness and whether it stimulates innovation. Although existing research is considered, greater attention is given to the possibilities for new research in these areas."

Robert Schuwer's curator insight, January 15, 2014 2:08 AM

A research agenda for OER from Marshall Smith, the visionary thinker behind the OER program of the Hewlett Foundation. He distinguishes four areas where research is most needed:

- Policy: "examine the positive and negative factors in the political environment that influence whether or not governments at various levels will create progressive OER policy." and "examine the characteristics and effectiveness of the variety of educational policies that constrain or enable the use of OER that currently exist in different countries and local jurisdictions"

- Access and Use: "Adding Value by Increasing Access and Going to Scale"

- Effectiveness: "How does OER improve efficiency and learning?"

- Innovation—Investigations into New Ideas and Positive Disruption.

Can serve as a starting point to define a national research agenda for the Netherlands, thereby contributing to a global knowledge base on OER.

Even though the concept of the Massive Open Online Course has become wildly popular during the last year, empirical research on these initiatives is largely absent. On the one hand, this is not surprising.

Difficulties researching the effectiveness of cMOOCs | You're the Teacher

Difficulties researching the effectiveness of cMOOCs | You're the Teacher | Everything open | Scoop.it

As noted in an earlier post, I have submitted some proposals for conference presentations on researching the effectiveness of connectivist MOOCs, or cMOOCs (see another one of my earlier posts for what a cMOOC is). I am using this post (and one or two later ones) to try to work through how one might go about doing so, and the problems I’ve considered only in a somewhat general way previously. I need to think things through by writing, so why not do that in the open?

Beaven, Tita: Qualitative methods for researching teachers’ (re)use of OER | Everything open | Scoop.it

This paper proposes variations around the themes of Peer Observation of Teaching and Professional Conversations as tools to investigate the use and reuse of OER by teachers. It reports on two qualitative studies on the use and reuse of OER by language teachers at the Open University UK. Teachers use LORO (loro.open.ac.uk), an open repository of OER for language teaching, to select their teaching resources.
