Jose Barrera's curator insight, September 10, 2023 6:42 PM

In the article, the author discusses the growing trend and benefits of the "Flipped Classroom" model, which initially gained traction through  educational platforms like Khan Academy. I find the approach compelling because it allows students to engage with lecture material on their own time through video, freeing up classroom time for interactive, hands-on activities. This resonates with my own educational philosophy, as I aim to incorporate more activity-based learning into my teaching approach, much like the author.

Good points to remember through the process of flipping.
Jose Barrera's curator insight, September 8, 2023 1:07 PM

The four pillars of success article gives me four strong pillars to find success in the classroom. I enjoyed reading about them and find a lot of value can be added to the classroom if we focus on having flexible environments, be okay with a culture shift, intentional content, and are focused on being a professional educator. These are vital to have success in the classroom as well as prepare students for their future endeavors.

Challenges mentioned in this article is that the model could standardize instruction and lead to a reduced role of teachers. Seeing this article was 2013, I do believe teachers roles have changed in the last 10 years ago into more of a facilitator role and we are more focused on making student-centered learning. I do find that using this approach makes it easier to engage students during the instructional period.

This is a great example of a Screenr lesson that could be flipped and then utilizes the Social media of Twitter and forum of Edmodo as part or a seamless learning experience for students.  This is very much like a webquest.  It even has an infographic.  It would be interesting what kind of product students could create after going throug this integrated technology learning experience.

Great article on the why of teaching and transformational instruction and learning.
Jose Barrera's curator insight, September 8, 2023 1:21 PM

I find this article interesting in that we should not allow students to just do drills and kill them of boredom doing it. We need to teach them to use their imagination. We need to teach them how to build the proper skills, and the proper mindset. The challenges arise from students who have resistance to a new approach to learning, and lack of training for teachers. Our traditional models of learning need significant changes and thus can make a new classroom setting seem strange.

R McGlothin's curator insight, February 9, 2014 4:52 PM

The Flipped Classroom concept is still a relevant tool for educators and students.  There are teachers who still struggle with creating quality flipped classroom videos.  This is a good resource and starter kit article.

Jose Barrera's curator insight, September 8, 2023 1:15 PM

This video was a great tool on how to make more effective videos to help students learn more effectively. Keith mentioned we should create online content so students can use it outside of class. This content can be lectures, videos, interactive activities, and practice problems.

To follow creating content, teachers must also have a plan for how the students will use this content and how they will be assessed on their learning. Flipped classrooms can be a successful approach for many students, but it is important to plan carefully and implement it in order to be effective.
