The Promotional Legacy of Game of Thrones | Online Digital Marketing Courses

"The unrivaled cultural phenomenon of Game of Thrones has an almost intangible quality - a mix of ingredients that has propelled it from great to cult to iconic in a relatively short space of time. Love it or loathe it, you’re likely to have been just a bit curious about how the show became so successful.

Today’s digital consumers command inspiring storytelling and attention-grabbing narratives from brands, regardless of sector or industry. In fact, superior brand storytelling can increase the value of a product or service by more than 20 times.

As a show that boasts one of the most gripping, chaotic and unpredictable plotlines television has ever seen and based on a series of fan- and critically-acclaimed novels, it's fair to say that Game of Thrones has deep foundations in storytelling."

Read the full article to find out more about how GoT used these techniques to continue their story off-screen:

  • social media hashtags
  • beautiful death website
  • live streaming experiences
  • collaborations with brands
  • quest for the throne scavenger hunt
  • bleed for the stone experiential campaign
Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s insight:

I am such a fan of shows that move their story past the screen.  Even more so when the fans take the story into their own hands and generate their own content.  Among my tv favourites that are doing this well is GoT and Walking Dead.  The story only ends when the reader says it does.

Clicking on the real: telling stories and engaging audiences through interactive documentaries | LSE

Clicking on the real: telling stories and engaging audiences through interactive documentaries | LSE | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

"Fort McMoney is a documentary game. As a player your role is to explore the oil town of Fort McMurray, Canada, in the heart of the Athabasca oil sands development. You ‘meet’ characters and ‘vote’ on issues; scouring the interface for clues you aim to sway others through your posts. While Fort McMoney is playful it clearly shares documentary’s serious intent: in Fort McMoney ‘everything is real: the places, events, the characters.’ To play is to engage with the political, social and ecological issues of oil production.

Fort McMoney is part of a growing collection of works that marry the social, political and aesthetic ambitions of documentary with the forms and representational possibilities of digital media. Documentary makers are actively exploring new ways of telling stories and engaging audiences and they are doing so with reference both to new technologies and the idea of documentary – it’s techniques, aesthetics and critically, its social functions."

Read the full article to find out more about the changing world of documentary.  Be sure to check out the Fort McMoney trailer or play the documentary game.

Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s insight:

I'm a little partial to this documentary game as it's produced by Canada's National Film Board (NFB).  The NFB has been recognized as a world leader in transmedia and interactive media.  I grew up watching their films, and love to see themselves reinventing themselves to stay in the game.

I'm looking forward to digging deeper into Fort McMoney.  The format has been described as - where film marries video game.  I'm curious to see if it will impact my feelings about the place.

National Geographic Experiments With a New Form of Digital Storytelling | pdn

National Geographic Experiments With a New Form of Digital Storytelling | pdn | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

"The August 2013 issue of National Geographic magazine published an in-depth look at a pride of lions living on the Serengeti, a region in northern Tanzania. While a photo essay focusing on wildlife is nothing new for the magazine, this particular article was transformed into an immersive online experience. National Geographic calls it the first of many experiments in digital storytelling.

'The questions for us are always: Did we make the story more accessible or more emotional? Were we able to add a valuable layer to the narrative?” explains Sugrue. “Without a truly linear story, we built the framework in a way that let the user dictate what they wanted to get out of it, whether it was images, audio, video or text. We all agreed that the end result should be simple, that the main thing would be for the design get out of the way and let the amazing visuals take center stage.'”

The microsite for the article, which can be found at http://ngm.com/serengeti-lion, utilizes still images, video, text and audio.

Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s insight:

I find myself more and more attracted to multimedia stories that let me pick my own path. This is a very nice, clean example that really showcases what National Geographic does best - the pictures.

Applying Digital Storytelling to Projects | JISC Business & Community Engagement

Applying Digital Storytelling to Projects | JISC Business & Community Engagement | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

I’m currently working with colleagues from JISC Netskills to work out how we can apply some of the learning from and techniques of Digital Storytelling to the way in which JISC projects communicate their outputs. These are my notes from a pilot workshop.

We defined Digital Storytelling as ‘using media from different sources to produce a story’. There’s a technical aspect to it in terms of finding images, the creation of the final output, and publishing it.

Creating a digital story

1. Writing

2. Recording

3. Image set-up

4. Gathering images

5. Upload to SlideShare [or other platform]

6. Attach your audio

7. Publish & share

Pinterest premieres transmedia storytelling experiment | Daily Dot

Pinterest premieres transmedia storytelling experiment | Daily Dot | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

Pinterest has already changed the way marketers think about commerce.  But it may also be ushering in a new form of storytelling.  Transmedia company BeActive is using Pinterest to share one work of fiction through a combination of episodic videos, audio snippets, and visual pins.

Beat Girl is part graphic novel, part TV show, and all on Pinterest.  It tells the story of fictional DJ Heather Jennings in a method that’s not quite TV show, not quite in-person character sketch, and not quite graphic novel. With 160 pins and counting, viewers can catch new glimpses of Jennings’ life added daily. The interactive drama is presented as a prequel to an upcoming multi-platform video series.

While the finished product may be a genre of entertainment never seen before, BeActive CEO Nuno Bernardo says it’s rooted in a much older art form.  “We wanted to bring back the popular Photonovels of the ‘60s to the new digital generation,” he said in a statement. “The tools and functionalities introduced by Pinterest allowed us to release the content the way we envisioned. As a world’s first we expect that in the future more and more stories will be told on this network using photos and still images”.

Bernardo told the Daily Dot that although Beat Girl is based on a novel, he found it to be a story uniquely suited for multiple platforms.
