It appears that the rail system is going to be reviewed after a summer of rail disruption. Critics of the current franchise model argue that the failure of the East Coast Mainline franchise indicates the flaws of the current system of rail privatisation and the Labour Party are committed to renationalising the railways. |

I missed this last week - Channel 4 looks at the state of Britain's railways - and compares the UK to the rest of Europe, capitalising upon the annual increase in rail fares. Is poses the simple question: why are Britain's trains so bad? And would renationalising them make them better?
It's a detailed look at the rail network and covers the history, and recent history, of the network. It's excellent! |
Change is coming - the man responsible for the current rail review, Keith Williams, has used a speech to the industry to flag up the fact that the current franchise model "is no longer delivering clear benefits for either taxpayers or farepayers".
And indeed that's what the latest evidence would suggest - with contracts failing and customer complaints on the rise. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the sector.
