Body Talk: Feminism, Sexuality and the Body in the Work of Six African Women Artists | WIELS, Brussels

Body Talk: Feminism, Sexuality and the Body in the Work of Six African Women Artists | WIELS, Brussels | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

Body Talk addresses issues of feminism, sexuality and the body, as they play themselves out in the work of a generation of women artists from Africa active since the early 1990s.

Bringing together artists from different parts of the continent, this group exhibition strives to define and articulate notions of feminism and sexuality in the work of women artists whose body (their own or that of others) serves as a tool, a representation or a field of investigation. In their work, the body manifests itself, whether sequentially or simultaneously, as a model, support, subject or object.

India's 'missing' women cast shadow over national art fair

India's 'missing' women cast shadow over national art fair | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

"India Art Fair installation exposes the country's stark gender divisions by paying tribute to millions of women who never were.

Hulking figures cast in black steel towered over the India Art Fair as it opened on Friday, with the eerie silhouettes representing the country's millions of "missing" women.

The outdoor installation, M.I.S.S.I.N.G. by artist Leena Kejriwal, is a visual response to the growing gender gap in India, which has led to severe imbalances in parts of the country. Fuelled by sex-selective abortion, infanticide and the death of girls through neglect, the issue forms part of a national debate about women's rights triggered by fresh scrutiny of sexual violence."

Anita Steckel: Equal Exposure

Anita Steckel: Equal Exposure | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

Anita Steckel, Just Waiting for the Bus, Photo-montage, 1969–70

"In the 1960s and 1970s, Anita Steckel fought for the public acceptance of explicitly sexual art made by women, as part of the broader feminist art movement that was pushing for a revolution in the gender dynamics that continued to stifle women artists. Steckel’s photo-montages provocatively revamped existing imagery, often adding nudity and references to sexuality in order to vividly convey timely social or political messages.

Selections from Steckel’s archive are currently on view in NMWA’s Betty Boyd Dettre Library and Research Center. Papers, photographs, and art illustrate her boundary-pushing art and activism."

How much does gender influence the art world?

How much does gender influence the art world? | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

An exhibition showcasing six female abstract artists poses questions about the real impact of gender on output and perception in the art world.

...The exhibition raises two questions (amongst many) that I want to address briefly here. Is there anything specific to say about women and abstraction: does gender matter when art sheds all references except to its own processes and potentialities as colour, line, space, surface, rhythm and so forth or when it seeks to commune with abstract forces and effects we call nature?

And what do these specific and highly diverse artists in the show bring to the debate about the continuing relevance of abstraction in painting now?

...'Female artists need feminism like a hole in the head'

Yet Riley is also the artist who commented in the early 1970s, that women artists needed feminism - attention to gender issues - like they needed a hole in the head. Understandably she belongs to a generation of artists for whom modern art offered the wonderful opportunity to ‘be an artist’, simply and firmly engaged with artistic questions. Yet when the great American abstract painter Helen Frankenthaler died in 2011, the obituary writers repeated over and over again her disdain for feminists even while it was feminist writers who wrote some of the most interesting and appreciative analyses of her work, taking her much more seriously than the art historians who simply allowed her work only to be a ‘bridge between Pollock and what came after’.

The Second Sex – a visual footnote | e-flux

The Second Sex – a visual footnote | e-flux | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

A proposal by Tobi Maier, curator in residency

The exhibition The Second Sex – a visual footnote is a visual essay inspired by the book of the same name by French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir, whose existentialist take on many of the issues of feminism first emerged with the publication of Le Deuxième Sexe in 1949. One of de Beauvoir’s principal challenges was to foster women’s emancipation and the recognition of their working force. Through a close reading of de Beauvoir’s seminal book, the exhibition introduces a number of works that lean towards ideas highlighted in her texts, such as representations of women in myths and the descriptions of their lived situations.

The Second Sex – a visual footnote presents installations by three woman artists spanning a variety of media, from film, sculpture, and photography to collage.
