How many women artists can you name? | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Fighting stallions, Anna Hyatt Huntington.

How many women artists can you name – besides Mary Cassatt and Georgia O’Keeffe, that is? Don’t worry. You’re not the only one. And it’s not just an American thing. A poll conducted by the BBC Radio and London’s National Gallery asked Brits to pick the ten best paintings in English collections. Not one work by a woman got a vote, not even Berthe Morisot’s “Summer’s Day,” which London’s National Gallery owns. Never mind that Morisot was the only woman in the world’s first Impressionist show. And never mind that tough-to-please Edgar Degas recommended her for inclusion.

A headline in the current edition of Art News makes the point: “The Most Famous New York Sculptor You’ve Never Heard Of.” The story was about Anna Hyatt Huntington whose sculptures stand all over the city and whose work is showing at Columbia University’s Wallach Art Gallery.
