"The Pale Fox, the expansive installation building on Camille Henrot’s previous project, Grosse Fatigue (2013), deliberately sets out to overwhelm and overtax the viewer. The sheer number of objects, the concentration of the stories behind them, the splicing of different disciplines from the most diverse fields of knowledge, competing principles of classification and, not least, the sensory experience within the space itself, blanketed in an atmospheric, endlessly looped soundtrack (composed by Joakim Bouaziz) and the brilliant azure of the walls and the floor, coalesce en masse to demonstrate the excesses of an unbridled urge to collect and horde, an excessive, almost pathologically compulsive desire for order, which ultimately is condemned to spill over once more to create its own disorder."

First large-scale solo exhibition in Paris by Camille Henrot opens at Bétonsalon: Center for art and research

First large-scale solo exhibition in Paris by Camille Henrot opens at Bétonsalon: Center for art and research | Gender and art | Scoop.it

PARIS.- Bétonsalon – Center for art and research announces the first large-scale solo exhibition by French, New York-based artist, Camille Henrot in Paris. The Pale Fox is an immersive environment building on Henrot’s previous project Grosse Fatigue (2013) – a film awarded the Silver Lion at the 55th Venice Biennial. While Grosse Fatigue attempted to tell the story of the universe in thirteen minutes, The Pale Fox is a meditation on our shared desire to understand the world intimately through the objects that surround us. As Camille Henrot explains: “The main focus of The Pale Fox is obsessive curiosity, the irrepressible desire to affect things, to achieve goals, to perform actions, and the inevitable consequences.”

More than 400 photographs, sculptures, books and drawings – mostly bought on eBay or borrowed from museums, others found or produced by the artist – are displayed on a series of shelves designed by Camille Henrot in the environment conceived for the exhibition. They populate a space that is both physical and mental, conveying an almost domestic atmosphere: it could be a bedroom, a room that one could inhabit.

The Baltimore Museum of Art is the first museum in the U.S. to present French artist Camille Henrot’s Grosse Fatigue, an exuberant, award-winning 13-minute video on the creation of the world. The video, which won the Silver Lion Award for most promising newcomer at the 2013 Venice Biennale, engages viewers with an energetic array of documentary, exotic, and familiar images accompanied by a bold spoken-word soundtrack. Black Box: Camille Henrot is on view in the BMA’s Contemporary Wing March 5 – June 15, 2014.

Forthcoming Exhibitions : Camille Henrot | Chisenhale Gallery | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Chisenhale Gallery is one of London's most innovative galleries for contemporary visual art, promoting national and international developments in visual culture.

Chisenhale Gallery is pleased to present an ambitious new commission and the first UK solo exhibition by French, New York-based artist, Camille Henrot (b. 1978). Entitled The Pale Fox, this new installation develops from Grosse Fatigue (2013) – the film Henrot presented at the 55th Venice Biennale, 2013, for which she was awarded the Silver Lion for most promising young artist. Demonstrating the breadth of Henrot’s output, this exhibition comprises an architectural display system, found objects, drawing, bronze and ceramic sculpture and digital images.

The Pale Fox articulates our desire to make sense of the world through the objects that surround us. Unfolding like a frieze across the four walls of the gallery, a polymorphous aluminium shelf provides a structure wherein the four points of the compass are aligned with stages in an individual lifecycle, the evolution of technology, philosophical principles of Leibniz and the four Classical elements: fire, water, earth and air. This highly personalised aggregation of distinct systems of thought is presented through an intense accumulation of objects and images encountered within a highly constructed, meditative environment.
