Emmy Andriesse, Man from Arles, 1951-1952

This year we celebrate the birth a hundred years ago of Emmy Andriesse (1914-1953), an important photographer of the first half of the twentieth century; a perfect occasion for showing her photographs from the Van Gogh Museum collection.

Not long before she died, Andriesse made a photo series called The world of Van Gogh. She went to Provence and Auvers-sur-Oise to capture in photographs the subject matter of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings sixty years earlier. The first half of the exhibition is devoted to these splendid photographs. They radiate Van Gogh's spirit, but above all illustrate Andriesse's own style. They show how Van Gogh remains an inspiration for artists.
