Scuderie del Quirinale - Frida Kahlo

Scuderie del Quirinale - Frida Kahlo | Gender and art | Scoop.it

20 March - 31 August 2014
curated by Helga Prignitz-Poda

The Scuderie del Quirinale is to host a magnificent exhibition on the life and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), a symbol of the artistic avant-garde and of the exuberance of Mexican culture in the 20th century.Rome and Genoa are joining together to stage an integrated project comprising two major exhibitions focusing on the life and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

The exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, running from 20 March to 31 August 2014, explores the art of Frida Kahlo and her ties with the artistic movements of her time, from Mexican Modernism to international Surrealism, analysing their influence on her work.

The exhibition at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, entitled Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and due to run from 20 September 2014 to 15 February 2015, carries on the story, taking an in-depth look at Frida's private life, a world of immense suffering at the hub of which we invariably find her husband Diego Rivera, in a relationship that was to have a huge impact on her art.

TV5MONDE : Frida Kahlo, icône et artiste totale

TV5MONDE : Frida Kahlo, icône et artiste totale | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Diego Rivera et Madame | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Frida Kahlo, her real look, on display at the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City

Frida Kahlo, her real look, on display at the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"...Over the years, Kahlo's look has become as influential as her art, capturing the fancy of trendsetters from Madonna to French designer Jean Paul Gaultier. There are YouTube tutorials on how to braid hair like she wore hers, and Vogue Italy lets readers know where to shop for Kahloesque skirts and jewelry. Now, a full collection from her wardrobe is going on display in Mexico City after being locked away for nearly 50 years in her armoires and dressers..."

Unbound: Contemporary Art After Frida Kahlo | MCA Chicago

Unbound: Contemporary Art After Frida Kahlo | MCA Chicago | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"Frida Kahlo is one of the most famous artists in the world. Her reputation and persona have grown immensely since her death in 1954, yet posthumously she has been turned into a stereotype of Latin American art. This predicament, along with her celebrity status, often overshadows the confrontational and boldly transgressive nature of her paintings, and ultimately undermines the revolutionary intent of her work.

[...]

In 1978, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago presented Kahlo’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States. Using two of the works included in the original 1978 exhibition, Unbound: Contemporary Art After Frida Kahlo brings her work into a dialogue with contemporary art. The selected artists in this exhibition share Kahlo’s spirit of rebellion and similarly assert themselves against the patriarchy as they insert their voices into dominant artistic discourses.

Frida Kahlo and Other Female Icons Don't Need Makeovers to Be Amazing

Frida Kahlo and Other Female Icons Don't Need Makeovers to Be Amazing | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Oops, someone did it again… another feminist icon has been rendered  “beautiful” through the magic of Photoshop. Thanks, but no thanks.

This time, Frida Kahlo is the recipient of the unwanted makeover. The Mexican  painter is remembered for her unibrow almost as much as her self-portraits, but  some blogger saw fit to remove her signature style in favor of something more  typically pretty.

The resulting work basically speaks for itself, but, as Color Lines reports,  the artist’s explanation for his or her “remastering” is even more offensive:  “Really she’s a bit of a wreck. So this got me to thinking. What would have  happened if her girlfriends had done the right thing and taken her to a  beautician (which clearly needed to happen)?”

After digitally shaving the eyebrows, waxing the upper-lip hair, and lightening  the skin… VOILA! Kahlo looks unrecognizable. Is she really “better off” now that  she’s just another pretty face?

Belle et terrible Frida Kahlo - France Inter

Belle et terrible Frida Kahlo - France Inter | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Frida Kahlo / Diego Rivera. Art in fusion

Frida Kahlo / Diego Rivera. Art in fusion | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"The Musée de l'Orangerie is presenting an exhibition devoted to the legendary couple Diego Rivera (1886-1957) and Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). The originality of this exhibition lies in the fact that their works will be presented together, as if to confirm the impossibility of their divorce, finalised in 1938, but reconsidered after just one year apart.

It also gives us a better view of their respective artistic worlds, so different and yet so complementary, through the deep-rooted attachment they shared for their country: a cycle of life and death, revolution and religion, realism and mysticism, workers and peasants."
