Chicago on Chicago

Chicago on Chicago | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"The Radcliffe Institute’s Schlesinger Library is presenting a long-running exhibit by the groundbreaking artist Judy Chicago. And Tuesday afternoon, to provide the ultimate perspective, it presented Chicago herself.

The versatile Chicago has been creating art in a myriad of styles for half a century, and is perhaps best known for her large installation pieces of the 1970s and ’80s reflecting the role of women in culture and history. She also has created major pieces focused on the Holocaust, and performance art using offbeat materials such as fireworks."

“Judy Chicago: Through the Archives” will be at the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at the Radcliffe Institute through Sept. 30.

Judy Chicago's best photograph: woman and smoke

"This was taken in the California desert in 1970. At the time, a lot of monks in Vietnam had set fire to themselves to protest against the war and its expansion into Cambodia. I called the shot Immolation IV. I'd been doing a lot of research into women's history and the practice of sati in India, where widows are forced to throw themselves into the flames of a funeral fire. So I was interested in the whole practice of immolation, forced and chosen. After all, one could say up to that point women's art and women's history had been immolated."

"This is the year of Judy Chicago. In honor of her 75th birthday this July, the iconic feminist artist is hosting what she calls a "dispersed retrospective," scattering her life's work -- five decades of art making -- across a selection of museums and galleries from California to New York. In 2014 alone, she'll be featured in the Brooklyn Museum, MANA Contemporary, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Schlesinger Library, the Palmer Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum of California, the New Mexico Museum of Art and Denver's RedLine. She's also releasing two major tomes, "Institutional Time" and the aptly titled "The Dinner Party: Restoring Women to History."."

Judy Chicago Birthday: Celebrating The Feminist Art Pioneer

Judy Chicago Birthday: Celebrating The Feminist Art Pioneer | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Today is the birthday of feminist art pioneer, Judy Chicago. As an artist, Chicago has sought to master an array of artisan skills, pursuing everything from needlework and textiles to welding and pyrotechnics. But her work remained content driven, with works like "The Dinner Party," "The Birth Project," and "The Holocaust Project" demonstrating her persistent exploration of issues surrounding childbirth, female sexuality, and death.
