Mary Kelly - Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London

Mary Kelly - Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is honoured to present Mary Kelly’s first solo exhibition in London in over a decade, On the Passage of a Few People through a Rather Brief Period of Time. Juxtaposing an iconic installation Circa 1968 (2004) with a new body of lint works, Kelly uses the show to explore the legacy of the past. When the influential cultural theorist, Stuart Hall, died in February of this year, many described it as the end of an era. Taking this perspective, Kelly asks what defines an era, and for whom, not only as political discourse, but also, as trace, or residue, of the personal lives that were defined by it.

Mary Kelly, Dicere, 2014

The second-wave feminist and conceptual artist Mary Kelly has made a career out of combining the personal with the political, examining issues of gender, identity, and collective memory in large-scale narratives. Her works, which frequently include text, collage, and everyday objects, are on view at Art Basel, where they will be the focus of Pippy Houldsworth Gallery’s booth.
