NYLON MAGAZINE - Art attack: designing modern women

NYLON MAGAZINE - Art attack: designing modern women | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"When you think of women in design you probably think of one of two things: female fashion designers or marathons of Designing Women on TV Land. (Both are awesome, we'll admit.) Designing Modern Women: 1890-1990 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York is about to broaden your horizons with a retrospective of female contributions to the broader field of design.

This isn't just a showcase of the Ray Eames or Sophie Tauber Arps of the art and design worlds, nor is it a heady exploration that non-art nerds won't be able to relate to; this exhibit runs the gamut of mediums, artists, and movements meaning there is truly something for everyone to love. From Anni Albers' Bauhaus designs for wall hangings to Robert Mappelthorpe's photos of Patti Smith to Jules Cheret's famous posters for Loie Fuller at Folies Bergere, the galleries are full to the brim with inspirational and interesting objects for, by, and about women.
Perhaps the coolest pieces in the exhibit are Bonnie MacLean's concert posters from the '60s for bands like Pink Floyd, The Doors, Buffalo Springfield and more for shows at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium. MacLean's creations combine sweeping Art Nouveau stylizations with LSD-inspired colors. Translation: these are the best posters ever..."

Resurrecting the Modernist Legacy of Designer Eileen Gray

Resurrecting the Modernist Legacy of Designer Eileen Gray | Gender and art | Scoop.it

PARIS — "Eileen Gray designed furniture that didn’t so much inhabit as space as touch lightly on it. With discreet forms and minimalist waves that contrasted their industrial materials to the waning of Art Nouveau, the Irish designer quietly influenced the Modernism that would guide architecture and design beyond the 1920s and 30s..."

The retrospective on Eileen Gray is at the Centre Georges Pompidou (19 Rue Beaubourg, 75004, Paris) through May 20, 2013.

A selection of artworks, books and ephemera related to British architect and educator Jane Drew.

Jane Drew (1911-1996) was a British architect and educator. Her work signaled a major shift from universal modernism to responsive and vernacular design. Drew was an instrumental agent across the projects and fields of urban and domestic design in which she worked, yet has remained unrecognised relative to her male contemporaries.

MoMA | Designing Modern Women 1890–1990

Modern design of the twentieth century was profoundly shaped and enhanced by the creativity of women---as muses of modernity and shapers of new ways of living, and as designers, patrons, performers and educators. This installation, drawn entirely from MoMA's collection, celebrates the diversity and vitality of individual artists’ engagement in the modern world, from Loïe Fuller’s pulsating turn-of-the-century performances to April Greiman's 1980s computer-generated graphics, at the vanguard of early digital design.

Highlights include the first display of a newly conserved kitchen by Charlotte Perriand with Le Corbusier (1952) from the Unité d'Habitation housing project, furniture and designs by Lilly Reich, Eileen Gray, Eva Zeisel, Ray Eames, Lella Vignelli, and Denise Scott Brown; textiles by Anni Albers and Eszter Haraszty; ceramics by Lucy Rie; a display of 1960s psychedelic concert posters by graphic designer Bonnie Maclean, and a never-before-seen selection of posters and graphic material from the punk era.
