The challenge of dwindling attention spans
There’s a well-recycled statistic out there that says the human attention span has dwindled from 12 seconds at the start of the century to less than 8 seconds today. And while some people argue the legitimacy of this data point, the reality is that attention spans certainly aren’t getting any better. The multisensory nature of the internet, social media, and other digital technologies is rewiring the human brain and making it harder for people to stay focused on singular tasks and objectives – both online and offline.

Why We Can No Longer Rely Only On Schools And Companies For Professional And Personal Development

Why We Can No Longer Rely Only On Schools And Companies For Professional And Personal Development | Design, Science and Technology | Scoop.it

There once was a time where everything you needed to know for your career was taught to you by the educational institution you attended and the company you worked for. You would go get your four year bachelor’s degree in whatever topic and that information would stay with you for a little while, then you would periodically take some additional classes offered through your company.

Today by the time you graduate with a four year college degree most of the information you will learn will be outdated and perhaps obsolete.

The world has changed and it’s up to us as individuals (and as companies) to make sure that we can change too. Organizations must enable employees by deploying the right technologies to connect people and by supporting employees and allowing them learn outside of the company. Individuals must get rid of all excuses and understand that they can learn anything they want anytime they want to learn it.

Content marketers teach, engage and persuade with words in a variety of channels. They need a strong grasp of language to write engaging content that stands out in a crowd and positions their company in a positive light. But writing content is not the only thing that a content marketer has to be capable of. Here's the real portrait of a Content Marketer: More than a marketer.

Self-Directed Learning Well Explained and 27 Actions

Self-Directed Learning Well Explained and 27 Actions | Design, Science and Technology | Scoop.it

TeachThought.com has a series of posts about self-directed learning by Terry Heick and the staff, well worth a read! “

“Learning is most effective when it’s personalised; it means something to the learner. That happens when people feel they are participants and investors in their own learning, shaping what and how they learn, and able to articulate its value to them.” — Leadbeater, Charles

Definitely well worth a read

Avery's curator insight, March 25, 2013 11:56 PM

My Thoughts:

You can't teach someone how to learn. You can give them helpful tips and advice, but a single structure for education is not going to work for everyone. It's so much harder for people to learn their true potential, to reach their goals, when they're only shown a single path to them. You show them the path through the forest, but what if there's a rock face nearby that also leads up to where they want to go, and what if they happen to be a fantastic rock climber? It just makes more sense to show someone a map if you can, instead of directing them towards only one path.
