A Framework for Differentiation

A Framework for Differentiation | gpmt | Scoop.it

"Differentiation is adjusting and modifying what skills and concepts student learn, what materials the use, and/or how their learning is assessed based on the needs of the students.

Our students are not all the same, so we cannot expect that teaching a lesson one way will reach every student."

We hopefully are all trying to differentiate, but sometimes we need that creative push and encouragement. This is a wonderful resource with printable infographics for coming work areas and links to concepts and other resources to really get you thinking in every direction outside of the box - each student will gain something out of you using this.

These differentiation flowcharts will prompt teachers to make good decisions around scaffolding of student learning.

“Ten Practices To Avoid In A Differentiated Classroom”

“Ten Practices To Avoid In A Differentiated Classroom” | gpmt | Scoop.it

A great find from Larry Ferlazzo but what are the other five? A bit of research led me to a presentation by Rick Wormeli "Fair isn't always Equal: Assessment and Grading an a Differentiated Classroom" and sure enough the other five were located in the presentation. The are listed below:

* Assessing students in ways that do not accurately indicate students’ mastery (student responses are hindered by the assessment format)

* Grading on a curve

* Allowing Extra Credit

* Defining supposedly criterion-based grades in terms of norm-referenced descriptions (“above average,” “average”, etc.)

* Recording zeroes on the 100.0 scale for work not done

Updated Personalization vs. Differentiation vs. Individualization Chart Version 3

Updated Personalization vs. Differentiation vs. Individualization Chart Version 3 | gpmt | Scoop.it

From your feedback, we revised the chart so assessment AS, OF, and FOR learning was clarified for each of the terms.

Individualization involves assessment OF learning. This is where summative assessment is grade-based and involves testing to confirm what learners know and do not know.

Differentiation involves assessment FOR learning and OF learning. This is assessment that involves time-based testing where teachers provide feedback to advance learning.

Personalization involves assessment AS learning, FOR learning, and a minimal OF learning. This is where teachers develop capacity so learners become independent learners who set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on learning. Assessments are based on mastery.

Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization

Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization | gpmt | Scoop.it

Here's a chart that explains the differences between personalization, differentiation, and individualization. After some research on these terms, Barbara Bray and I were able to determine the differences between these terms in relationship to teaching and learning.

Thank you for your comment. Kathleen and I are looking for feedback on how educators are using this chart.

I am in Wisconsin and we are part of CESA 1 NxGL. I team teach with 42 kindergarten kids and we are using personalized learning. We are working through the tangles of being able to personalize with kids who are just learning to read, write and compute. It has always been a struggle to be able to differentiate the difference between true personalized learning vs. differentiation and individualization. You have done a beautiful job of creating a chart that makes this clearer for all stakeholders. This chart will be useful for helping colleagues, administration and parents see the true definition of personalized learning and the potential that it holds.

Hello rwteam in WI,

Thank you for your comments on this chart that Barbara and I created. We would be glad to have you share this with your colleagues in WI and elsewhere. We commend you and your teams in CESA 1 NxGL on the hard work that you are doing to make personalized learning a realty for your students.
