The Unofficial Dalai Lama Guide To Online Teaching - Edudemic

The Unofficial Dalai Lama Guide To Online Teaching - Edudemic | gpmt | Scoop.it
The teachings of the Dalai Lama are as important as ever when it comes to online learning and online teaching.

Caring doesn’t sound very academic and it certainly isn’t as new as Big Data. But I think any course that has a strong element of caring will retain more students than a course with low teacher-student interaction.  The key is having an involved teacher who is trained not just in the subject matter but also to listen, watch for falters, be ready to gently cajole,  try new things, and convey a sense of enthusiasm

This infographic fits my PLN's curation guidelines by doing a good job of using graphics to help explain a concept and make it easier to learn.

How Students Learn: Thoughts from a Favorite Author - Faculty Focus | Faculty Focus | gpmt | Scoop.it

This article is about discussion and questioning skills. Although it is written with the traditional classroom in mind, the ideas apply to our work as online facilitators.  Links to the source article are included. ~ Dennis

"The first article by Peter J. Frederick I read has a great title, “The Dreaded Discussion: Ten Ways to Start.” I recently looked at the article again and most of his suggestions are just as good now as they were 30 years ago when the article was published. When you are as old as I am, you come to accept that there are few new things under the pedagogical sun and there is a certain agelessness about many good teaching ideas.

Peter uses four question sets to keep his instructional decision-making on track. Here is a sample question (or group of them) from each of those sets."

Discussion Prompts - Pedagogical Repository

Discussion Prompts - Pedagogical Repository | gpmt | Scoop.it

Dr. Linda Putchinski in UCF's College of Business Administration has three rules for creating discussions prompts:

Rule 1: Make the prompt relevant to your course content.Rule 2: Make the prompt current, such as something recently in the news.Rule 3: Add a twist like an ethical twist to the prompt.

In addition to these rules, Dr. Putchinski frequently adds in learner choice by allowing students to select from two discussions topics.

This is a three part series that will help any online practicioner to better understand the complexities of writing discussion prompts and facilitating threaded discussion.  This is a university level research effort with a solid bibliography.  Well worth reading! ~ Dennis
