Using High-Interest Media to Improve Literacy

Using High-Interest Media to Improve Literacy | gpmt | Scoop.it

"The Literacy Shed is a fantastic site for creative writing ideas that will definitely help reluctant writers. The site aims to provide teaching ideas coupled with relevant media that students will love. This week’s resource, for example, is a writing activity using “La Luna” Pixar’s awesome animated short that has been nominated for an academy award. There are currently 23 different “sheds” on the site, each one focused on a different learning theme, such as Poetry, Adventure, Picture Books, Fantasy, and much more."

Flow Conference | University of Texas (kinda an Unconference - very interesting)

The 2012 Flow Conference will resemble traditional academic meetings in name only: there will be no panels, no papers, and no plenary sessions. Instead, the event will feature a series of roundtables, each organized around a discussion question on contemporary issues in television/media culture and scholarship.

Respondents are asked to submit a brief abstract addressing one of the roundtable questions listed below. We especially encourage responses that address issues of race, class, gender, sexuality, age, and ability, as well as international perspectives.

To submit a response send a 150-word abstract to flowconference2012@gmail.com by July 13, 2012. In the subject line of the email, please put the title of the roundtable to which you are responding. Be sure to also include your full name, e-mail address, and affiliation in the body of the e-mail.

Forget Klout: you can't measure influence on Twitter - Telegraph

Forget Klout: you can't measure influence on Twitter - Telegraph | gpmt | Scoop.it
Companies such as Klout and PeerIndex say they can measure individuals' online
influence. Monty Munford wonders whether this is even true, let
alone relevant.

"Measuring Influence since 2008" is the grandiose claim on the Klout website that is supposed to entice people to check a score from 1 to 100 on how their engagement on social media impacts on their peers.

When I read this I was minded of the Hollywood film L.A. Story when Steve Martin tries to woo a visiting English reporter by taking her around his city. 'Some of these houses are almost 25 years old' he enthuses, thinking that he's impressing her.
