ISTE Learning & Leading with Technology (May Issue) features "A Step-by-Step Guide to Personalize Learning".

Great article - makes clear the difference between differentiation, individualisation and personalisation - and also clearly lays out some ways to gradually lead your students - and your teaching - towards more personalised approaches for your students. Great framework for those keen on potential of PBL/Design Thinking but wanting to know how to get from where they are now to where they want their class/students to be.

Personalize Learning: The Expert Learner with Voice and Choice

Personalize Learning: The Expert Learner with Voice and Choice | gpmt | Scoop.it

Who is the Expert Learner?
Expert learners take responsibility for their learning. They view learning as something they do for themselves, not something that is done to them or for them. [Source: The Expert Learner]

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) perspective for the Expert Learner is for a learner to be:
> Resourceful and knowledgeable

> Strategic and goal-directed

> Purposeful and motivated

Then how can you develop expert learners with voice and choice?

The Three Stages of Personalized Learning Environments provide the process to encourage learner voice. This process can guide the design of personalized learning environments that meets the needs of all learners.  Stage One is teacher-centered and encourages learner voice and some choice. Learner voice is a critical first step. There are ways to do this and this table here describes how the teacher and learner roles change in this stage.

When learners have the opportunities to say what they think and be heard by their peers and others, they feel their opinions and perspectives are valued and appreciated. Think about yourself as a learner and what it might feels like if you have a voice in how you learn and even influence decisions about teaching and learning.

UDL and Personalized Learning | Barbara Bray - Rethinking Learning

UDL and Personalized Learning | Barbara Bray - Rethinking Learning | gpmt | Scoop.it

In this interview you will learn about UDL and how the principles of UDL could be used to help all students understand their own learning. Envision using the UDL principles to help learners understand how they learn and how to personalize their learning.

Universal Design in Learning (UDL) is about providing instruction and the appropriate tools to all learners so they are successful in meeting their learning goals. Personalized learning is all about the learner and starts with the learner. There seems to be some confusion about what UDL is from the perspective of personalized learning.

Q7:  Why is UDL necessary for all learners?

When any student understands how they learn, they are empowered to take ownership of their learning. This opens doors in having tools and resources that can help them become independent learners and motivated in learning, in and out of school. It also opens up windows of opportunities for learners to appreciate their aptitudes, talents and gifts and for teachers to guide and nurture them in the learning activities and projects.

Jim, you have given a constructive and a solution to the crisis in our current education system. We are currently battling to improve performance and motivation of our learners with our current methodologies. Your presentation indeed needs to be explored and internalised by our current system. We are really battling to get results from our learners especially in maths and sciences. Well done. I will read more on how I can duplicate your achievements to our current education system in South Africa.
