Scratch, is a project in programming from the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. The article in commonsense.org describes how Scratch can be used to help our youngest learners plan and organize their thinking. The site explains how Scratch can be use in “creating a plot, setting, sequencing, and perspective.” As the authors of our course text state, “Even the planning stage can be displayed digitally rather than with pencil and paper” (Graham, MacArthur, & Fitzgerald, 2013, p.209) which can be a huge boost to reluctant planners. Blocks of code can be used to organize and evaluate a story, images can be added to enhance the digital story telling, and students can record narration. Research and nonfiction writing, poetry, personal Narratives, narratives, and literature reflection can all be organized and presented using this tool.
