2020: The Year Of the Edtech Paradox

2020: The Year Of the Edtech Paradox | gpmt | Scoop.it
In many ways, 2020 has been THE year of edtech. Technology experienced a meaningful surge in adoption by schools, districts and parents. The industry saw large capital inflows and more edtech “unicorns” than in any other prior year. Mergers and acquisitions are booming. Edtech funds closed larger funds, and top-notch venture capital investors including a16z, Lightspeed and Union Square Ventures have developed investment theses on education.

After COVID-19 fades away, lets hope education systems around the world were able to learn the lessons of 2020 and not allow ourselves to get caught flat-footed every again. Going forward, some things may return to normal, but hopefully others won't.

Now Is the Time to Redefine Learning — Not Recreate Traditional School Online

Now Is the Time to Redefine Learning — Not Recreate Traditional School Online | gpmt | Scoop.it
It’s a common refrain among the change-resistant: “We’ve always done it this way.” But in a difficult year, where charting the unknown has become a daily occurrence, it’s a tough argument for a school to make. We’ve never done things this way—meaning it may be the perfect opportunity to do them differently.

Loveneet Kaur's curator insight, November 12, 2020 1:07 PM
We all know that technology has become a major part of our lives and especially for the younger generation. Is it a good thing or bad thing? I believe it can be both but embracing new technology isn't bad but using it too much for no real reason is bad. Schools are occupied with technologies but that has become a way of learning. According to this article students find it easier to use technological things for their school work, different websites and tools have made learning easier for the new generation and now we are stuck with it in a good way.
Kassandra's curator insight, November 16, 2020 12:20 AM
I feel this new generation doesn't really know how to enjoy life without technology. Especially right now with the Covid- 19 kids can't even go out to explore and have fun with other kids. They are forced to stay home and the result of that is not having a normal life. Been on their cell phones constantly is not okay but at the end of the day, it is that parents fault. They need to keep their kids busy with other activities and phones will be the last option for them. As the article said, they don't want to get themselves educated because they're always busy on social media. Reading a book is not even an option.
Jacqueline Elizondo's curator insight, January 25, 2022 10:21 PM

The quote by the author of this article "As long as the technology is beneficial and not distracting, we must welcome technology as a friend–not an enemy–in the classroom" is truly one to remember in my opinion. Many of our students are already growing up with technology at the tips of their fingers, and I don't find it ok to just remove that from them when we can easily use it for educational purposes with all the apps available to teachers now. Which is why this article dives into using it and welcoming it in a safe non-distracting way.

Mobile Learning Should Disrupt What "School" Is

Mobile Learning Should Disrupt What "School" Is | gpmt | Scoop.it

"There’s an idea among educators that ‘mobile learning’ simply means shifting the completion of work and activities from the journal to the tablet. Of course, that’s part of it, but it’s also selling the practice way shorter than it should be. There are numerous benefits to mobile learning both for the teacher and the students."

Virtual learning can’t succeed without digital skills training

It takes years to develop the skills to effectively teach online. Every course is an experiment of what works and what doesn't.

Virtual Teaching and Learning News by Melissa Ruiz's curator insight, February 2, 2021 1:06 PM
Wow! This article is so important because we think by providing students with laptops or Ipads that we are closing the digital divide but we are not.  We have to make sure students and their families do have the devices and Internet capability to log in, but we also have to train them on how to use the device they have. Low income families stated that during the spring lockdown many of their children could not complete their assignment at home due to lack of Internet access. The next step is making sure digital skills are taught to these students and families who need it in order to complete assignments and log in to virtual classrooms.
Alejandra Parra's curator insight, June 5, 2021 1:05 PM

I can agree that virtual learning cannot succeed without first training students on how to use devices. Learners need digital skills training in order to use technology effectively. When delivering training to their students' educators need to take learner ages into consideration. In some instances, parents might need training as well in order to take full advantage of virtual learning. I have seen firsthand the frustration students and parents experience in learning new technology . Not everyone has the capacity to learn without training. This is something that administration and educators need to take into consideration before implementing new changes.

As Districts Return to Remote Learning, Are They Any Better Prepared?

As Districts Return to Remote Learning, Are They Any Better Prepared? | gpmt | Scoop.it

"When educators describe their frenzied switch to remote learning in the spring, most talk about being caught off guard. Some mention how little they knew then—about virtual learning, as well as the virus that forced them out of their school buildings. Others shudder at the tight timeframe they were given to completely reconstruct the instructional day. There was no time for preparation or “best practice.” It was an emergency."
